If the economy could support street vendors selling apple computes then we would be living in a Utopian society. Dick Locher you fail, for ignoring both the complexity of the item being sold and the basic fundamentals of the economy.
///
There is a reason this piece is always presented as an old woman with starving children and tattered clothing selling small bits of fruit. Thus, the depiction above either implies are economy is doing swimmingly or it is simply an epic fail on your part.
///
PS: The art style and everything about it scream 80’s, did you rehash this from your collection???

Could it be he’s saying in the old depression days they sold ‘real’ apples and now they are selling old used Apple computers instead?

Ironic, isn’t it:
http://www.autolife.umd.umich.edu/Design/Gartman/DCasestudy/GreatDepression.htm
on the site linked above the third picture is from 1929 and it was a common practice in the Great Depression.
Finally, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 established a minimum wage ($.25 per hour) for most workers involved in producing goods for interstate commerce.
A nickel bought a lot of things in 1929.

Acellist, your link didn’t work, but I dug it out anyways, sad pics indeed, I feel good I guessed the cartoonist point here without really knowing the exact reference he was using……:-)
