I wonder how that would pan out in South Africa?

Bigots hate a lot of people, but they REALLY hate mixed race people.
Makes life so irritating for them.

” Mixed race and Proud” Huh? How about confused? I wouldn’t call it bigotry or prejudice. Just common sense.

Are you saying mixed race people are confused? Or shouldn’t be proud of all their heritage? If so, that IS bigotry and not common sense.

Willamp, I’d love for you to spell out just why you think people of mixed race are “confused”.

willamp: Wtf? So mixed race people are confused? WTF?!
I cannot believe someone has just said that aloud! Way to go on publically showing your lack of understanding of what it is to be mixed race in a society which defines people in nice little boxes.

Okay here’s my point. I being a light or bright skinned African-American. Find that a lot of children call me as well as other light skinned A.A’s mixed.
People of my generation had to deal with the negativity once associated with being black.
You know in the 60’s James Brown made a statement in the song”Say it Loud”(I’m black and I’m proud.)
And that was a necessary progressive statement for it’s day.
Cause at that time fair skin was considered more attractive that darker skin.
Now 40 years later, I’m dishearten to hear children furthering the division in the black community by saying things like this.
To me it seems to reverse the clock back to a time when African Americans didn’t see there own beauty.
Personally as a bright-skinned person I find the the term “mixed”offensive.
But I know this term isn’t just about African Americans.
It’s for all people that are of multi-ethnic backgrounds.
So I don’t mean to come off as a troll.
I just don’t want the term misused by people that it doesn’t apply to.
Even though you can say just about everyone has a degree of multi-ethnicity to them.

I think your last statement makes the best point.

I’m confused. I fail to understand why the offspring of, say, one parent of Northern European (but not so far north as to be Sami) ancestry («white») and one of African ancestry («black») should automatically be characterised as «black». Perhaps someone could explain ?…

Henri, my college roommate and I were born a week apart, he in Japan, I in Canada. At age five we both moved to the U.S. and grew up here. At college he was applying to law school while I was applying to med school. He applied as a minority; I did not.
I pointed out this hardly seemed fair, given our foreign births and similar histories. He answered, with tongue only slightly in cheek, that it was because he looked like a minority, and I didn’t.
Maybe that’s the answer to your question?

Absolutely no offensive taken. I’ve been on message boards where you could tell the membership was there just to be abrasive. This web page isn’t one of them. Thank goodness.
