And exactly what is wrong with being Buddhist? Oh right, they don’t go along with all that kill ‘em if they don’t see it my way. (with some apology to Society of Friends and a limited few others)

Sadly, this is a very, VERY accurate cartoon. Most people don’t have a clue as to why they sit in a pew on Sunday. Certainly, it couldn’t be for following Jesus or we would have ran Bush out of town on a rail for starting an illegal and immoral war. We would also have hung the justices who suggested that killing a pre born baby is a good thing to do and a woman’s “right”. No, most “Christians” are they just because they are there. The Christianity of about 90% of most folks hasn’t really affected our society much at all.

You know why Episcopalians never attend sex orgies? Too many thank you notes to write.

Dale, I assume it was a joke, but Wiccans don’t worship Satan– they don’t believe in Satan.
It would be nice if a lot of “Christians” would actually read the Bible and find out what they’re supposed to believe.
Horsey has been one of my favorites since his “Worship the sacred rock” cartoon on the history of religion!

May I point here to Matthew 6, 1-19 here and Matthew 21, 28-32.
I’m sure many people believe in God and have an interest for sprituality but they won’t say it because they are afrait to be linked to some zealots (we know who they are).
I was baptised catholic and I keep it that way out of nationalism; the Catholic church and some very good and very smart clerics played an important role in the survival and developement of the Acadian nation. Although I have a strong interest in Buddhism, that doesn’t keeps me from regularly reading the new testament and the words of the Christ (you know, the guy who gave his name to Christianity) and think “Hmmm, that makes a lot of sense”.
I read a few parts of the Quran, too out of curiosity.
There’s not enough wisdom in this crazy world to refuse smart words when we read them, no matter which faith they came from.
Recent events may have turned people away from religion, but it will take more than that to turn them away from God.

And now, a brief pean, from my boyhood buddy, Lynn, now ministering to the flock in the wilds of NE Arizona:
Jesus made us all the same … deep down inside;
Jesus made us all the same … deep down inside;
Black or white or yellow or red,
We’re all gonna end up dead;
Jesus made us all the same … deep down inside.
(It’s better with Lynn’s guitar and catchy tune.)

Nit pick time:
Buddhists can be just as violent as anyone else - why do you think Zen became so popular in Japan? (Killing is in the nature of things).
Why aren’t the followers of the Rabbi Jesus (Joshua or whatever his family called him, not the anglicized) called ‘Jesusians’? I don’t think he gave his name to the phenomenon, but Paul/Saul did.
I’m with charliekane - we all die someday.

Eventually you outgrow the cycle of birth and death. What you truly are was never born.It simply is. This fellow from India, Nisargadatta, always has something interesting to say when you click here… http://www.mpeters.de/nisargadatta/index.cfm

Ok, let me reformulate; his early followers named their religion after the title they gave Ieshouah of Nazareth; the Christ (the annointed one).

IrishEddie, what do you mean by “pre born baby”? A three-month foetus? A fertilized egg? If “babies” begin at the moment of conception, then is the standard birth control pill, which I believe allows fertilization but prevents unterine implantation, morally equivalent to a third-trimester D&C?
If abortion is against your religious beliefs, then don’t have one. And if your name is Eddie, I doubt you’ll ever be put in that position.

There was a survey taken a few years ago among our overwhelming Christian population in which it was found that NONE of the respondents could repeat even the first four books of the New Testament. (It’s a famous child’s prayer – “Matthew, Marl, Luke, and John, bless the bed that I lie on.”)
Another interesting point was one member of a discussion group studying the Old Testament describing (with disapproval) one of the characters in, I think it was Kings, as not being even “Christian.”
A good way to stop visits by the nice young Mormon missionaries who appear to be endemic around here is to answer their question, “Do you believe the Bible to be the word of God?” with an unequivocal “No.”
Corosive Frog said, 7 months ago
jksaw; bleeep, I’d like to be able to answer them that, but it’s just not quite what I think.

Yes, it was… that is why I used the quotation marks!
You can find a Wiccan marker at Arlington National Cemetery, too!

Wicca as an earth centered religion is now popular enough that the pentagram is recognized as an appropriate marker in a cemetary. Wicca is not devil worship or the worship of evil,BTW, but is similar to ancient practices that call upon the spirits of earth, air, fire and water, to purify and bless the practioners.

Frog – “but it’s just not quite what I think.” Nor is it in my case, Frog, but I’ve tried engaging these sweet kids in the complex meanings of “God,” and the mix of history, polemic, inspiration, and the profound influence of creativity that makes up our present Bible (not to mention the Apocrypha) and it’s really futile. “No” is a missionary conversation stopper, even accompanied by a smile. They’ll go home and pray for me, and that’s fine.
IrishEddieOHara said, 7 months ago
Actually, jkshaw, I have found it equally deflating to the nice Mormon missionaries to ask them for their unbroken line of Apostles back to Peter, John, Thomas, etc. Last time I asked that question, they said they’d be back with the list. The next week I saw them down at the corner “handy market” and yelled across the street “Hey, I’m still waiting for that list!!!”
Never saw them again. In fact, I don’t get many visits anymore from them or the JW’s. Guess I’m not quite stupid enough for them to consider me a “prime candidate for conversion”.

Mormons don’t believe in apostolic succession, Eddie. If you want that, you’ll need to talk to the Roman Catholics, the Orthodox, and the Anglican Communion. If that’s important to you, that’s fine. But it’s simply not important to them.
