    You are talking about a very limited part of what Wall Street does. Certainly you can bet your own money on the stock market. But banks finance corporate illegalities, slush funds, and money-laundering operations, all with impunity. And regardless of what you think about the borrowers of sub-prime loans, the banks provided them, knew they were bad loans, and sold them for a profit to too-trusting investors.

    Banks provide loans that they know can’t be paid for, bet that the loan will default, pay the company to default, and collect the bet. This has not been determined to be illegal. Go figure.

    So, continue to focus on just your own little world, and ignore what the banks are doing to the rest of the planet. But please don’t try to tell us how straight-forward those powers are, and how the fact that your stocks and bonds can be above-board and traceable can be generalized to the entire banking system. This type of myopic, self-centered approach is what got us here in the first place: “Yes, they’re reprehensible to most, but they never did anything bad to me personally.”

    Except when the government decides to give them billions of dollars. Then it most decidedly becomes your problem.

    OPM (pronounced “Opium”) or Other People’s Money is very addictive. Just ask a Progressive Leftist Socialist and they’ll tell you!

    Understood. And who is anyone to say that your approach is incorrect?

    I used to be like you in that regard. I read a book (of fiction) where several characters would be separated for years, but then re-united. Every time they re-united, the author described the same thing: “….and they talked about the world situation, which was desperate.” So I stopped paying attention to anything that didn’t affect me directly.

    Suddenly, it became apparent to me that, although those things didn’t affect me “directly”, that was not true. It affected me directly, but not immediately, so cause-and-effect were harder to follow. Now I pay close attention; not because I can do anything about it except to best protect myself from what others intend to do to me and my interests in the future. You may be wise to do the same. Or not. It’s still a free country, or so they say……

    @Enoki

    I know you are too smart to believe that the only people living on OPM are progressives, leftists and/or socialists. Please stop presenting yourself this way; it does not flatter you.

    So far, there’s been a few feeble attempts (at best) by the usual right wing posters. Harley, I’m sure you have plenty of ready-made Republican talking points and wing-nut links to rebut this toon.

    .
    There is no rebuking this toon. Simply brilliant.
