I wouldn’t be surprised if he faced those sorts of comments. Then maybe he exclaimed, “Bully!”, used that big stick he liked to carry around, and expanded national parks anyway. Could be a way forward.

Good toon, Wasserman, I especially appreciate it when editorial cartoonists and commentators reach back into history to show us the double standards and hypocrisy we indulge in from time to time. Stewart does this a lot, and he uses actual video clips to do it, so no commentary is necessary. He lets some people reveal their hypocrisy with their own words.

I’d have voted for this Republican. Hard to believe the GOP was the party of Lincoln and Teddy R.

The Republicans ID try to manage Teddy. That’s why he formed the Bull Moose party.

The GOP has a compulsion to deny their own history. This has made it easier for the right-wingnuts to take it over!

Teddy was a progressive but was also a raciest
. I doubt that he would be today. Good people change, some bad ones too like LBJ.

The GOP also has a history of hating the very acreage that “God gave us”. Sorry, native peoples; us, not you. The shining seas, mountains majesty, gifts of riches, etc, to them, have no “right” to exist unless it’s for destruction. The land and its marvels are ONLY useful if American dollars are being generated from them. And the GOP uses God’s bounty as a reason for killing God’s bounty. It’s not enough that 99% of usable land is being used by people. We MUST get that other 1% dug up and polluted or we’re not following God’s will to be fruitful!

Oh, did you hear the mining representative who claimed that Kentucky mountaintop removal practices is actually environmentally friendly? Know why? Because that area WAS so annoying; mountainous and hilly, but now it’s nice and level for people to build on! Removing or polluting streams, forests and the mountain itself is good stewardship. And he’s no doubt serious, at least as far as his dollar-filled bank account is concerned.

Speculation is always fun; one can make it up as one goes along.

“Let the valleys be raised and the mountains made low.” –Isaiah 40

That’s why razing mountains meets with wholehearted approval by the right-wingnut Christians.

Teddy Roosevelt, the Trust Buster, a really good Republican who put the needs of the people first, at least part of the time. Sure, he had flaws but look at the time and place.

Ken Burns’ documentary series about the national parks is currently showing on PBS. It is well worth watching. I find it ironic that T.R. initiated the use of executive decrees for such a worthy purpose, but it has now turned out so badly.
