    @Ms. Ima

This is about “state” taxes, not federal taxes. Just what taxes does the federal government charge on goods that are even sold in regular stores? I live in California where such taxes (along with local sales taxes) run just shy of 10%, and I buy from Amazon that is now charging me such taxes. As amazon usually saves me from 15% up to as much as 50% on most goods that I buy, especially books (remember those?). I have no problem with being so taxed. It is one of the costs of living in one of the best places in the best country in the world, and I at least am not against paying said taxes!!

Republicans like sales taxes, since they are regressive.
    -
It’s good to remember that when Reagan was elected governor, the first thing he did was to raise the sales tax by 25%.

We don’t have a state sales tax. Considering some areas have state, county AND city sales taxes, exactly HOW is any business, large OR small supposed to “fairly” tax out of state sales internet sales?

It’s fun to watch the conservatives run around bumping into each other on this issue. It’s supported by big corporations, so they’re for it, but it’s opposed by other big corporations, so they’re against it, but it will hurt small businesses and the poorer people, so they’re for it, but it involves more taxation, so they’re against it…

" but it will hurt small businesses and the poorer people, so they’re for it,"

How cynical and intellectually dishonest. Are you so focused on your hatred of the fiscally conservative group that you have to spew unsupported vitriol in our direction? First, small businesses built this country; it’s the liberal agenda of higher taxes and more regulatory burden that crushes small businesses, not the “lower taxes, less regulatory burden” we are pushing. And why would we want to hurt “poor people?” Unless you’re talking about making them get a job. Then yes.

    “more regulatory burden”

Yeah, we should get rid of the regulations. Worked well in Texas.

“And why would we want to hurt “poor people?””

    I’ve often wondered that myself.

“Unless you’re talking about making them get a job.”

Like one of those jobs from the job bill…oh, wait, that was killed by the Republicans.

    The truth hurts, huh?

Here in the Shlong State (Florida for those who don’t know) we have no internet sales tax. I bought a camera online and all I paid was shipping. Had I bought this at a local photo store I would have been subject to a 7% sales tax (though to be fair NO ONE had this camera in stock). If local stores are taxed at 7% and internet stores are not taxed, how is this fair for people with a physical address?

“how is this fair for people with a physical address?”

That’s the main argument in favor of the tax. But the main argument against it is this: Say I run a small business, selling my product on Amazon or eBay. Do you realize how many different sales tax laws I’d have to keep track of? It’s not just 51 variations, either. I don’t know about other states, but it California the sales tax rates vary depending on location…there must be hundreds of them. And you can bet each state has a bunch of bureaucratic forms that need to be filed at various addresses and various times. It’s a daunting task for a large corporation, never mind for a mom and pop store.

You Americans really hate paying taxes… Boy oh boy, your country will be below Banana Republic status in a hurry if you don’t stop the paranoia!

Morty says Americans hate paying taxes. Wrong, except that most Liberals hate paying their own taxes (they love taxing those they are envious of). What many hate here are the wasting of the record amounts of taxes that are being brought in to Big Gov’t.

So on your planet all liberals are poor, and they’re all envious of conservatives, all of which are rich, huh? Ever tried meeting some real people, instead of just inventing mindless stereotypes?

Wasn’t it Grover Norquist who made a career out of stopping Repubs from paying taxes?

Last I checked Warren Buffet, John Kerry, Tim Geitner, etc. weren’t poor. I never made those assumptions, you did from your planet I guess. Here on Earth, Democratic politicians are always trying to raise the taxes of all income levels (particularly the rich they are envious of) for some great cause, and so many get caught cheating and avoiding taxes themselves. It is always some Democrat saying that we can pay more taxes to Gov’t than required, but they never do it themselves.
