Dana Summers is the creator of the comic strip Bound and Gagged. He also finds time to co-create a second strip, The Middletons, with fellow Orlando Sentinel cartoonist Ralph Dunagin. His third job is editorial cartoonist for The Orlando Sentinel. His editorial cartoons have been in syndication since 1985.

What did you expect when the GOP cut federal taxes? That schools would simply close? That nobody would have to support local hospitals? It was a great move, if you wanted to stop spreading the cost of society across a broader swath of the economy and force local governments to make the hard choices while the GOP got to look like heroes on the federal level.

Good point, tj. It’s amazing how righties can distance themselves from the idea of government. As if the mean old “local government” depicted here is not made up of fellow taxpayers; fellow community people trying to solve problems. As long as rightwingers can avoid paying another (gasp!) $10/year in taxes, it’s OK with them that others struggle to keep local services going. If meanies in local government decided not to pay for street snowplows this winter, guess who would start screaming about inept government? Maybe only plow the streets of those willing to do their part.
