Hey, with “opinion”, one man’s truth is another man’s lie.

OK, define “truth”. Is it something you believe? You know, like “It is true that I believe in the Easter Bunny”. May well be true that I believe that, but does that make the Easter Bunny true?

Factcheck?
During the campaign the Republicans said if elected the Democrats would raise taxes. The self-selected factcheckers from the MSM answered the accusation.
Factcheck: Obama will not raise taxes. The Republicans are wrong. Basis for factcheck? Obama said he wasn’t.
After that I learned to be very suspicious of “factcheckers”.

Raise taxes? na just let Bushes tax cuts go bye bye. Raise taxes na, lets just pass a bill and not call it tax, we will call it pay it forward or a raise in this or that to pay for the grand thing. Raise taxes, na just carbon credits. Raise taxes just for wealth envy. Raise taxes because the thing we raise the tax on is bad for you.
A better way.
FAIR TAX!!!!!

oooh, that was a wet one.
National sales tax anyone? Rich people spend more, pay more? encourages saving etc. All the lefties like Europe – they got the VAT.
Gladius said, 3 months ago
Look at the %of income spent on sales taxes. They are regressive without a lot of tinkering.

@ynnek58
In an ideal society maybe there might be a national sales tax but here in the US it would just be layered over a still existing income tax and put more money in the hands of the politicans.

I fear you’re right. It should be in lieu of an income tax of course.

And no doubt the superrich would find ways to exempt themselves from a national sales tax anyway – buying things overseas directly if need be.

probably, but they pay no taxes now anyway – just people that are doing well, not to rich enough not to pay taxes. Poor people would buy less and thus pay less tax. It would at least encourage saving, a concept that has become foreign to us.

As with so many things, it’s all in the execution. Sales taxes tend to disproportionately affect the poor when the basics of life are taxed. For example, if groceries are taxes (they are not in NY but are in NC), the poor have to pay essentially the same as the rich because they all need food. You might argue that the rich will always buy more expensive food, but that isn’t necessarily the case. Same with gas, which is important for rich and poor alike, especially in non-urban areas. Or prescription drugs. Or clothing.
My point is, if you tax for the most basic of necessities, it does disproportionately affect the poor. It will also most likely result in a dramatic drop in revenue since sales taxes will be hard pressed to raise enough to cover the loss of income tax.
Could someone show me how a national sales tax would raise the required money while not hurting the poor and middle class?

No argument there, most states exempt non-prepared food (staples, as opposed to fast food, which is a choice) from state taxes, a national sales tax would likely do the same – I was thinking along those lines and should have clarified. Therefore, if you remove that small part of it it’s as fair as anything else. I actually think not having poor people pay any taxes is a mistake as they are more likely to vote for spending [of any kind] as they neither bear any of the burden, nor feel any of the pain. Regardless, a sales tax might be certainly simpler than the total special-interest driven mess we have now and just as fair.
motivemagus said, 3 months ago
Aha, but is it a choice? People working two or three jobs to keep going are hardly desirous of time spent in the kitchen as well!

It is a choice because if you’re working three jobs, you got kids, aren’t on welfare, and will do what it takes to support your family.
You’re probably happy too…
