One of the things that got the Smothers Brothers kicked off CBS was a Tommy Smothers joke about the NAAICP.

Not at all. It started with Dick singing a rendition of McNamara’s Band. Tommy interrupted him and asked, “Are there any Black musicians in the band?”

Dick: “Of course not. It’s an Irish band.”

Tommy: “Well, the NAAICP is going to hear about this.”

    Dick: “NAAICP?”

Tommy: “The National Association for the Advancment of Irish Colored People.”

Audience laughs. Dick finishes the song.

There was no mention of any dance step.

I googled and got the following from Wikipedia:

For the film by this name, see Black Irish (film). For black people in Ireland, see Black people in Ireland. For the cocktail sometimes called a “Frozen Black Irish”, see White Russian (cocktail).

The term Black Irish is ambiguous. People in different times and places have used it for separate reasons.[citation needed] Opinions also vary in regard to what is perceived as the usual physical characteristics of the so-called black Irish: e.g., dark hair, brown eyes, and medium skin tone; or dark hair, blue or green eyes, and fair skin tone.

My Irish heritage is just a small percentage of the total (English and Scottish also included- most of the former) but I like to celebrate the whole thing. My hair has always been some kind of reddish blond and blue-grey eyes. I like that I’ve always had a tiny short nose and high forehead. Been told more times than I could count that I look like Debby Reynolds- even though now too few remember her (she was here in Phx recently and I wish I had been able to attend).
