I thought it was a mime impression of walking against the wind.

I thought Dill was stuck to the pavement by a big wad of gum on the bottom of his boots. I kinda like Bruno’s interpretation, too.

A rancher in my Toastmasters club once commented on all the men walking funny during Cheyenne Frontier Days because they hadn’t worn their boots in the last 51 weeks.

One of my favorite “Far Side” cartoons was two cowboys competing in the “100 yard mosey”.

I have read that cowboys did mosey because of ill-fitting shoes, but too tight rather than too loose. (People who rode everywhere were reckoned to have tiny feet!)

It is really embarrassing to loose a boot whilst roping calves(or even goats).
