Richard Thompson's Cul de Sac, is a comic strip about the life of a pre-school girl named Alice Otterloop. It is a light-hearted comic strip centered around a four-year old girl and her suburban life experiences on a cul-de-sac with her friends Beni and Dill, older brother Petey and her classmates at Blisshaven Academy pre-school. Alice describes her father's car as a "Honda-Tonka Cuisinart" and talks to the class guinea pig, Mr. Danders. She has the typical older brother who plays jokes on her, and she contemplates ways to keep the scary clown from jumping out of the jack-in-the-box with friends.

Dill won’t mind sand and gum.

Alas! Poor Alice confuses the Nature Center place with nature itself! Ignore the Fountain of Sand and Gum, dear Alice, and groove on Sweet Nature!

When I was four, I was taken to the Lincoln Memorial. All I can remember was a toilet in the basement – it wouldn’t stop running. I can envision large water spouts swooshing around in the bowl. Kind of scary, 74 years ago!

Thanks for the insight. I have lived in the DC area for my entire life, but I’ve never actually been inside the Lincoln Memorial.
I have been to the Rock Creek Nature Center though. Rock Creek itself is more impressive. I remember taking a car load of out-of-town technicians through DC once, up the Rock Creek Parkway.
They were surprised to see what looks like a real trout stream in the heart of the Nations Capital. Too bad it’s polluted.

Well the place is called “Natures’” Center. Understandable she would be confused. Child logic again. Wrong but logical from their point-of-view.

I used to go to a place called Nature Center located in a rainforest.

Yes, Rock Creek is beautiful! I have a cousin who lives in Montgomery Village. And my aunt and grandmother used to live in Bethesda.
