Gee, I hadn’t seen anybody use “smek” since Milt Gosses’ “Nize Baby” some 60 years ago. It’s a good desultory sound perfect for the administration of a light bitch-slap with the back of your hand across a face.

Just isn’t working right. Smeck goes the jack-in-the-box just doesn’t ring right.

I heard smeck used on “Red Dwarf” but that was British.

and it was ‘smeg’ (easy to mishear. ‘Smeg" is – well, never mind what ’smeg’ is. It just isn’t very nice. Suffice it to say that when Smeg kitchen appliances began to be sold over here, generations of schoolboys (and more than a few adult men) collapsed, sniggering.

Smeg is from the scientific term ‘smegma.’ Anyone else can look it up for themselves.

That jack-in-the-box is either sick or evil, or (more likely) both….

I didn’t know that. Thank you. In colloquial terms it’s a vulgarity.

    Good hygiene will prevent that!
