   I remember those trenches, though not that they were so deep.. But, then, Dill is shorter than I was at his age….

   Those trenches are only deep in the middle. Just walk forward Dill, it will gradually take you back to ground level.

    This is too funny. I worked for a parks department and one of our jobs was to fill in those trenches. By the next day, the trenches were back.
