    Boot straps are nothing like shoe laces. They are little straps of cloth or leather found at the top of a boot, especially tall ones, which the wearer can pull on to help him get the boot on his leg.

    A petard was an explosive device soldiers once used to affix to doors and gates to blow them open and force entry. Not sure where “hoisting” comes in…

    Hoist by one’s own petard means to be injured/blown up by the device you intended to injure others with; I suppose the “hoist” is the blowing “up” bit.
