Whenever I’m invited to dinner and the dish contains mushrooms, I eat everything but the mushrooms. For me it’s like biting through rubber. And they say that people whose ancestors came from Slavic countries love mushrooms. Well, my grandparents came from from Eastern Europe (not western China) but I hate mushrooms.

I used to eat mushrooms out of the jar, long ago. Lost my taste for them. Never have cared for them in my food.

oh well, then I guess you get no dinner. that is what my mom would have said, we could not afford to be picky, eat what is fixed or eat nothing. But then my mom NEVER cooked or even ever ate a mushroom that I know of. Maybe in her later years on a pizza but she never ever cooked with them.

We love mushrooms in our house! Shiitake, portobello, button… they’re all good!

I love mushrooms, but they don’t love me — they give me intestinal cramps and explosive diarrhea.

OK, ewalnut, that’s way more than I needed to know!

To me, fresh cooked mushrooms taste like dirt.

Mushrooms are the very food straight from the devil’s own Rs, so they are. No fungus shall pass these lips of mine.

We were expected to try new foods, but were never forced or coerced to eat everything on our plates. if we didn’t like the taste of something, Mother’s usual comment was “OK, that leaves more for the rest of us.” It’s not to say she made each of us special foods. We were just free to push the mushrooms or green peppers or asparagus aside after trying a bite or two. None of us grew up to be obese. And, most of us outgrew our childhood dislikes. I wouldn’t eat a long list of foods as a child, including green peppers, onions, mushrooms, beets, asparagus, cabbage. As an adult, I developed a liking for almost everything I disliked as a child (except beets and asparagus.)

Me too. Onions are horrible, inedible. I used to hate mushrooms, but changed my mind at some point.I don’t see that ever happening for onions.

We had a favourite dish in our family – chinese braised pork, and it involved a LOT of onions. My dad (the gourmet in the house) would have to puree some of the sauce in a blender before my brothers and I would eat it. Loved the taste, just not all those onions.

As we got older, no blender was required, and Dad had to add more onions to the recipe to have enough for him and Mom!

I use to hate them also when I was a kid, then had them raw, sliced very thin in a salad with a great dressing. Been eating them any way I can get them ever since. YUMMY !!!

I’m allergic to yards of foods (won’t go into symptoms – aren’t you lucky? :-) ) so can sympathize with allergy sufferers.

With four kids and three adults up here, deciding on menus is a trip. One doesn’t like mushrooms, another can’t stand minestrone (though thanked me after I made it), etc. I like just about everything, but have an aversion to leeks (ew). I love asparagus, but they disgust my daughter, who loves leeks. No disputing taste.

I was like Mike when I was that age. I absolutely hated mushrooms, especially cream of mushroom soup. It was like eating little pieces of rubber. As I got older, they didn’t bother me so much.

@BenderSastre: Since you posted 8 hours ago, I’ll re-post this tomorrow, in case you don’t see it today:

I’m American-born (I guess by your name you’re from South Asia). My grandparents came from Romania, Poland and Latvia. I hated my mom’s borscht (smothered pink with sourcream) but loved the clear Polish borscht when I stayed with a family in Poland.

My avatar is a map of China; the red area is Xinjiang Province – the Uyghur Autonymous Republic, just north of Tibet. Without being political, I love Uyghur music (played with a dutar) and since I speak some Turkish I can communicate somewhat with Uyghurs as they are a Turkic people.

I love mushrooms, and cook them in many different way. One of my favorites is to pan-fry them in butter with shredded beef and sliced potatoes and serve them alongside two or three fried eggs. Mmmmm!

My dad doesn’t like either mushrooms or eggs. Therefore, a lot of people I know always ask him if he wants a mushroom omelette for breakfast.
