Once when I was about Ruthie’s age I was happily chattering away, telling my mom something that was important to me at the time, when she interrupted me to say “We will now have 10 minutes of silence”. Unlike Ruthie, I didn’t cry out loud, but I cried, and 60 years later it still hurts to remember that moment. I don’t care how old you are; to be shut down so callously is always going to hurt, and reacting to that pain does NOT make you a “whinny little snot”.

And then when kids turn 13 they clam up and parents can’t get a word out of them. Maybe if they hadn’t kept telling them to shut up when they were younger they’d still be getting conversation when they were teenagers.

I have neighbor kids who come around to talk to me and it may be because their parents don’t listen or appreciate their drawings (each spends a while on my refrigerator)reminding me of when my own kids were small.

Rose’s place is too neat (has she no hobbies?) The only time my place (or my desk) is THAT neat is right after cleaning it, then it’s back to normal. I’m always doing around 1/2dozen projects at once.

You know her outburst in panel 3 could be the ending of her story.
