Ugh. When are you EVER going to learn to quit while you’re ahead, John?

And the worst part is, he actually still thinks he’s being helpful!

Like many men, he doesn’t seem to know when he’s about to overkill his compliments.

To quote Michael Caine: “A brief shining moment…and then that mouth.”

Will John ever learn not to put both feet in his mouth?

Lynn’s Notes:

I don’t really like this strip. Even though the things Elly says about herself are exactly the way I felt, I don’t think I handled this idea well. What I wanted to say is: It’s easy to criticize, but the truth is… nobody’s perfect. Oh well. When a strip I hated came out, I’d cringe, wish I had done something better, and be glad that it would be forgotten by the next day. This was before we started reprinting the duds for everyone to read in perpetuity. So, do me a favour… skip this one and go on to the next!

Some guys just don’t know when to stop…….

John? Remember when we talked about ending these discussions one sentence earlier?

John admitted he’s not perfect. What’s wrong with that?

He’ll never learn!

John had to go and end it all that way.

He also implied that the only reason he accepts her flaws is because of his own — and by “accepts,” I mean “barely tolerates.”

Completely off topic, just musing. I do not know most of my mother’s family, and she’s been gone since I was a child. I only know they are Jewish and her maiden name was Newman. Wonder if we’re related some how.

The thing is not just that John is tactless and often says hurtful things; it’s also that he doesn’t much appreciate it when he gets the same treatment back—probably because it’s tactless and hurtful. If you’re going to use sarcasm as a weapon, don’t cry when someone uses it on you.

And yeah, Elly’s whiny. But whiny isn’t a free ticket for the other person to be mean. John’s an adult and he chose to marry her, have kids with her, grow old with her. So, suck it up, John, and learn to end these conversations one sentence sooner.

Give the guy some credit. At least he didn’t say, “Well, at least there’s nothing wrong with your eyesight.”
