I can remember the days when a dime bought a pack of 20 candy cigarettes. The real things were a whopping 50 cents.

I wonder what her brand is/was? Pall Mall? Raleigh? Camel?

I smoked mostly Raleigh unfiltered for the last year that I smoked. It may have been my response to the new “low tar” cigarettes that had come out. I had tried them, just to discover that I smoked twice as much. I switched to the stronger stuff in order to taper off. After getting down to about 5 or less @ day they started to lose their appeal.

So much for the idea (stated yesterday) that there are no bad students, only bad teachers. I’ve been both student and teacher, and believe me, there are good and bad students and teachers alike.

My fifth grade teacher hated kids (boys, anyway) and showed it. On the other hand, there were also kids who hated all teachers, good or bad.

Because we only seen people through Calvin’s eyes, I wonder if Miss Wormwood is really a mid-twenties young lady, ooozing charm to the rest of the world.I know all of my teachers were “really old”, until I look back at the actual pictures from back then.

Nicotene is good for the brain, allowing calm focus despite stress. Unfortunately, it is bad for heart and arteries, and if inhaled in smoke, for lungs – taking an average of 7 years off your life.

You wanna talk “Bad” teachers. I went to Saint Ann’s, a Polish, Roman Catholic elementary school in Chicago for 8 years. There was no kindergarten back then (1949). The Nuns (Sisters of Nazareth) were so sick, they would put their fingers in your mouth looking for gum and then tell you “You don’t know where I’ve had these fingers”. They were replaced by regular teachers in the 60’s. After surviving that, the Military was a piece of cake. Vietnam was a little tense.

If I were Miss Wormwood, I would have said “That may be, but I’m not the one who thirty years from now will have to look back at my pathetic shipwreck of a life wondering what went wrong, my lofty aspirations reduced to frequent purchase of lottery tickets. In fact, I’ll probably be dead. HAHAHAHA Hahaha HAHAHAHA hahaha!”

Back when cigs were 15c per pack, most everybody I knew that smoked were always saying that they wished they could quit.I figured the best thing to do was not start.Saved a lot of money, and can still breathe at 73.

Admittedly, Calvin is a tough nut—but a great teacher inspires the students to care, and then learning follows as naturally as water flows from a hose.

    .

In Calvin’s case, it would probably be a firehose. Look at how much he knows about dinosaurs.

He’ll be lucky if any private or public entity even gives him the time of day, with his level of apathy. Who wants to hire someone who only cares about what interests him, as opposed to caring about what’s necessary in order to survive, let alone meet the needs of the people around him, even if he doesn’t think it’s relevant to his limited world view?
