Relax, Snoopy — it’s 2012 now. We probably have a lot more veterinarians nowadays to take care of you when you’re sick. The most important issue, of course, is whether your current health plan will cover any of them!

If memory serves me, it was Charlie Brown that ended up in the hospital in 1980, not Snoopy.

Has there ever been a series in which Snoopy was ill? I know about the vaccination one, but not really ill, right?

Snoopy did stay at the vet’s in 1963 I believe. And it was for a few days at least. I don’t recall what the problem was.

From which year is it? Was there a weather forecast for 1980 in that newspaper, too?

Anybody know the original publish date for this one? I think it would be interesting to know when they first ran.

It didn’t turn out that way – because the government and politicians didn’t meddle in the affairs of veterinary suppliers (as they have been doing with human medical care since at least 1973 and the HMO act all the way through the current time).

In one strip, Charlie Brown and Linus were dreaming of when they’d turn 21 and would be adults. When Linus asked Charlie Brown when he’d be 21, CB figured it out and, with his usual look of gloom, said, “1984!”.

That was one of the few times I remember Schulz getting even remotely political; it also means CB was born in 1961, but he also first appeared in a comic strip on 2 October 1950, meaning that in 2012 he is either 51 or approaching his mid-60s.

    In 1980:

The Peanuts comic strip was in its 31st. year.

The Empire Strikes Back was the hottest Summer movie.

TV and movie actors went on strike for a few months.

The US backed out from appearing in the 1980 Summer Olympics is Moscow because of Afganistan invasion fears.

John Lennon died at the age of 40.

Ronald Reagan defeated Jimmy Carter to be the next U.S. President.

    Mt. St. Helens erupted.

Chuck E. Cheese’s one time rival ShowBiz Pizza Place opened its first location.

David Letterman hosted a short lived daytime talk show that lasted only four months, but would later have a success with his own late night talk show.

The comic strips Bloom County and The Far Side began to appear in newspapers.

The hostages were still in Iran since November 1979.

    ABC first launched Nightline.

That operation alone came to $53,000 USD, and that’s not including the subsequent frequent visits to my doctor (to be treated for Type 2 diabetes), my cardiologist, and my electrocardiologist for routine follow up — and since I had no health insurance at that time (what my company offered was a joke), I could never have afforded it. This is why I’m a staunch Obamacare proponent — I want everyone to have at least the same chance that I was able to have!

    @Snoopy_Fan

You are VERY welcome! Glad you enjoyed your birthday.

As you know… Mine is the same as Beethoven’s so it’s a while to go yet!

    Have a lovely Thursday.

Snoopy seemed real healthy in 1980. He hung around with Woodstock and was in contact with his brothers.

Did the original say 1980, or a different year? It looks like the two times “1980” appears, it is drawn differently from the other numbers.

This makes me think of the Far Side cartoon where one dog is sticking his head out of a car window and saying to another dog, “Guess what, Biff! I’m going to the vet to get tutored!”
