Mom: See what Alice picked for me? Dad: Wow. Is it a flower? Mom: I think so. It's got a thing on top that smells. Dad: Huh! Where did you find it, Alice? Alice: In our backyard! Dad: Really? Petey: Hey, everyone knows our yard can't sustain life.

It will turn out to be some incredibly rare mutated plant, and Alice will have picked the only known sample of it. Of course, it will die because it can only possibly grow in a yard which is known not to be able to sustain life . . .

I’ve got weeds that look pretty much like that in my yard – they basically appear full-grown (can be almost 1 metre high) overnight.

“It’s got a thing on top that smells.” Great line. Usually the best lines are reserved for the kids, but it’s nice to see Mrs. Otterloop getting a good one every now and then.
