@cdward – you can live without them. There have been societies with rules, but no rulers – including Israel before the Kings in the Bible (no human rulers, anyway). There is maximum freedom in such a society. Unfortunately, human nature is to avoid personal responsibility, and every society naturally decays into socialism, and then totalitarianism.
A society with no rulers was classically called an “anarchy”, but that word has been destroyed by propaganda portraying it as lawless. The US was created as a “minarchy” – minimal rulers. We are now the worlds largest socialist bureaucracy.
