I’ve heard of Jacques-Yves Cousteau, but never Sylvia Earle. She like the Amelia Earhart of oceanography (but hopefully without a mysterious disappearance)?

But no pressure, Alix!

Wonder how many (besides me) will look up – and subsequently up to – Sylvia Earle after this strip?

I’ve stuck my head into a bucket of water and opened my eyes while breathing through a rubber pipe. Congratulate me.

I like to go to the deep end of the pool and look around for as long as I can. If I start seeing “sea creatures” it is time to 1) go up, and 2) clean the pool!

People ask: Why should I care about the ocean? Because the ocean is the cornerstone of earth’s life support system, it shapes climate and weather. It holds most of life on earth. 97% of earth’s water is there. It’s the blue heart of the planet-we should take care of our heart. It’s what makes life possible for us. We still have a really good chance to make things better than they are. They won’t get better unless we take the action and inspire others to do the same thing. No one is without power. Everybody has the capacity to do something.

Sylvia Earle had many accomplishments, I still remember reading about her in National Geographic when she broke the human dive depth record in 1979 … see http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/JIM_suit

This strip reminds me so much of the ones where Calvin daydreams during class and goes all Spaceman Spiff! :D

ABC has on Saturday mornings about different species of fish, and what Alix is expericiing is more fun.

The Oceans and Deep Space are the two places we MUST get into if humankind is to survive and thrive. They are where we will find the food and energy to continue growth – and not to grow is to stagnate. Stagnation is slow DEATH.Just a word of caution to all you Luddite “back-to-Nature” IDIOTS out there. Because Nature HATES Stagnation, too. And Mother Nature WILL kill you if you don’t grow up.Not that this means we have to kill everything ELSE to grow, nor do we have to pollute everything we touch. And corporations CAN profit while building CLEAN energy sources, WITHOUT gouging people into poverty. They just can’t profit RIGHT THIS SECOND, like they want to now. They have to think “over the long haul” instead of instant gratification, like spoiled children. The brats.

I seem to recall that Sylvia went to St. Petersburg High School, but couldn’t find confirmation on a brief Google search; however, she did get her Associate degree from St. Petersburg Junior College the year I was graduated from St. Pete High. (And she’s a little over half a year younger than I am.) We both got a bachelor’s degree at Florida State University, though she finished two years before I did. I never met her, but still feel kind of a glow when I read about her.

I love the look of wonder as Alix considers possibilities of oceanic proportions. :-)
