And why is it that this inane argument has to come up here?Supporting women’s activities doesn’t mean dropping support for men’s activities, after all. “ordered to replace”, huh? Who gave those orders? Not Title IX.

A couple of weeks ago, Jan did a week of strips that commented on Title IX. It would appear that ZARDOZ was on a bender at the time, and has just now, sobered up enough to finally comment on those strips.

C’mon guys , leave your smelly jockstraps in your smelly lockers. Wait til Title IX really kicks in and men’s football coaches don’t make ten times as much as the President of the USA.

Such emotion. And I don’t give a fig for any sports. I think college football should go pro and drop the pretense there is a school attached.

@zardoz248: It is one thing to get up on the wrong side of the bed, but you must have slept under it. PS: no one cares what you think.

Yay for Alix and her imagination! I hope you become the next Jacques Cousteau. :-)I must have just missed the initial comment about Title IX, thank God. Chill out, whoever posted about it first and let the rest of us enjoy today’s strip.

Re: Title IX. Not sure where all this is coming from but, I was on our men’s fencing team in college. We also suffered from a lack of funding for equipment and coaches; the money went to football and basketball. We didn’t have big sponsors or big crowds. The women’s team got more support but only because they were nationally ranked. At the end of the day, if you bring in money you’ll get money.

Jacqueline Cousteau indeed! For now, I see the beginnings of Alix being brought very gently back to reality. She has already begun to learn in the camp, possibly without realizing it yet. Now, at lunch-time, we are seeing both sides of her fantasy. Soon, I suspect Alix herself will see her wading pool as the fantasy it is (in a good way!), and will move on to swimming with real fish. If all her teachers are as good as Erma seems to be, Alix will be chasing a degree in oceaography in no time. Meanwhile, Holly has a date with a basketball… Ohhhh, this is going to be a great summer!

For years ASU’s archery team won the national championship every year. They produces several olympic gold medal archers. Then they scrapped the team because of title IX.

Hope we’ll see Holly having fun at camp too. She’s been getting the short end of the stick in comments lately, but she’s really not a bad person, she’s just being 13.

I see a career in oceanography for Alix. I won’t mind swimming alongside fish and sea turtles plus sea lions and all.

Title IX is a portion of the Education Amendments of 1972.

The portion reads “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or activity”.

Its purpose was to address sexual discrimination in the hiring and employment practices in education.

A classic case of unintended consequences,It was ruled to apply to everything a school that receives any federal funding does.Access to courses and graduate programs, school clubs, bands, sports, whatever.

The biggest furor has been on athletic programs. If a school has a sport for one sex, it must offer funding and facilities for the same sport for both sexes. Some school have responded by eliminating male sports programs rather than providing opportunities for female athletes.Programs in wrestling, tennis, gymnastics, track, swimming, fencing, archery and other sports have been eliminated.
