… I had held out hope until now. I hoped he was pulling everyone’s chain because most would assume he was sending off Quill. I still have a shred of hope that he’ll have Quill stick around by other means, but after the quote someone posted yesterday from Greg about not liking long term relationships and ‘ditto Quill’, I know that’s the smallest of possibilities… and very unlikely.

Yeah. My interest in this strip just dropped to zero. I can just re-read the old strips and they’ll be the same. I had hopes for Brad and Toni, but those appear to have been dashed. Then for Gunth and Rosa, but those went belly up…Apparently, this is the cartoon version of Groundhog Day, except none of the characters realize that it’s the same day over and over again.

I think Quill was getting wishy-washy with his non-committal attitude all the time. Luann needs a more outgoing type as she is outgoing herself. I also don’t think Gunth and Rosa were matched well.Again, the two were polar opposites in character. Even Luann had more in common with Gunther than she does with Quill.

Greg is “uncertain” of how to handle a long term relation for Luann, and thinks he has no talent to do that……the funny things are…………….. he does a great job with her parents, and with Brad and Toni, he CAN DO IT with Q and L, specially when he has established a great barter between them when they talk, which SHOULD NOT BE HINDERED because they are a couple…………. I guess eventually when Greg “sees” that the only alternative for Brad and Toni is to be “engaged”, he will make something happen that will break them up……… and eventually he will make Rosa disappear again, thus ending Gunther’s potential love interest………. and he will have poor Knute and Crystal with an eternal “should we be, or should we not be?”

This reminds me of the old tv series, THE WONDER YEARS, I just knew Kevin and Winnie Cooper would get together. In the final episode, however, we find Kevin married someone else and Winnie had gone off to art school.

I have a hunch we’ve not seen the last of Aaron Hill. If people move away, sometimes tney move back.

Gunther “keeps falling too easily with other women” (Rosa, Tiff, Lue and Bern) and has shown a little jealousy streak that I don’t like, not as bad as Toni’s ex, but still something to consider, and actually Q and Luann had lot of things in common, Music, Acting to name 2……….. and they found it very easy to have a conversation with each other, and taking aside Luann’s fear that he would one day “fall for Tiff”…… he brought the best in her………. and that fear seemed to be “solved” during the time Luann and Quill were with Tiff in the pool

A few months ago, when I’d said (posting as Bill the Butcher) that Evans had lost his mojo and was just recycling tired plots, I was roundly condemned by a chorus headed by High Priest Mordecai of the Holy Church of Greg Evans. Certainly, I’m not too high-minded to gloat right now at the general uprising of discontent. I mean, what did you lot expect? Can anyone mention a single plotline on this farce since the Great Washington Trip Snorefest of 2008 which did not fizzle out? I’ve stopped reading this comic for some months now but will be back for a few days, until this too fizzles.

Ahem – Quill’s a senior, did he have any concern about Luann when faced with the prospect of graduation? .As for Luann – do you remember when you were 16.5? Two years/graduation was an eternity away, so of course Luann wasn’t concerned yet about what would happen to Quill. At that age “now” is now. The only planning these two have done regarding the future is deliberately not get involved so they don’t get hurt, and you see how well that turned out. We’re not exactly talkin’ brain trust here, people.

Quill could learn some basic manners and turn off his cell phone.

Not only he didn’t turn off his cell, worse he did: he responded to two calls.

I despise people who won’t turn off their cell phones in important situations like this one, letting them ring, respond, and spoil the moment.

OK now, Greg- here’s the thing: it was my interest in Luann that brought me to this site, as anyone who has had a teenage daughter can appreciate the ups and downs of that time of life (I also relate to Zits, having had sons) but this thing of building up a relationship just to let it die is getting tedious. She has finally made a mature decision about her feelings for Quill. I’d like to see that rewarded with an ongoing courtship.

Distance makes it hard to develop a relationship. It’s not that much of an obstacle to a preexisting one. There are several ways around this, but it needs to start with Quill giving Luann a hug, holding her and telling her everything will be okay and they’ll find a way – i.e., making it clear that he WANTS this. This is why my brother and I don’t start anything we don’t plan to put a ring on.

Reminds me of Fiddler on the Roof when Motel Kamzoil says “Even a poor tailor is entitled to some happiness!”.Maybe Greg will pull “some happiness” out of this, but it almost seems that he playing on the insecurities and disappointments of teens as they try to solve the puzzle of adolescence.

When Quill first came over and sat down he immediately started talking to Luann about how they had decided just to be friends because he knew he would be going back to Australia. Probably he had come over just to tell her the time had come before he realized she had other immediate things in mind. This would explain why he went quiet for a surprising time, even folding his arms, which seemed strange at the time. Maybe Luann is right today that they should have given themselves the year. Maybe this is why Greg has hardly ever let us see them together in the year—her time, longer in ours. None of this makes it less frustrating and disappointing for us—infuriating for some in fact.

Blame, I KNEW I was gonna hate today’s strip. The kiss scene the other day was so perfect.

I’m torn on this storyline. I can sympathize with posters who still want to see Quill and Luann “do it” because there is a sweetness and honesty to their relationship. As long as done safely, and what they both want, no problem. For as tacky as this sounds, something to remember each other by (I really don’t mean that quite; try to read between the lines).Yet I think to one person’s (sorry on forgetting names) post about comics are supposed to be funny and not reality; another referred to people wanting to see Charlie Brown kick the football. That’s where I’m torn the other way; Greg has always done a great job (IMO) of showing that real life is full of disappointments. Luann is a strong character, but the strength comes from making lemonade out of lemons. So, bottom line, I don’t know which is best. Will be interesting to see how this plays out-and sorry for such a long post!

Considering some of the progressive things Greg has done in this strip, a “Luann-loses-her-virginity” plotline is almost certainly in the works. However, this is just not it; at least I hope not. The past week and a half the strip has been just dull and awkward (and, yes, I know first time sex is like that, but it’s just stretching out a one-joke (or incident) affair.) Let’s just get out of the bedroom, call it Pam Ewing’s dream, and move on until the plot is better suited.

Under a dictator like Stalin it really wasn’t much in the way of Communism and it was very similar to National Socialism, they even said it out loud. Why early on they were willing to help the Germans.

“Said out loud” – where exactly? Uh, nope, it wasn’t because they were “similar” that Germany got economic aid from Russia – it was strictly a quid pro quo deal. In ‘39 when Hitler’s rearmament efforts left Germany dangerously short of raw materials, Stalin offered valuable supplies, but it was In exchange for territory, technology, and equipment which was needed for its own rearmament efforts, not because they were idealogical buddies..Thing is, not all totalitarian regimes are alike in their aims or ideology. You really should look closely at the anti-Bolshevik propagada posters the NSDAP put out in the late ‘30s. Stalinism saw the creation of a “New Man” as liberating a non-ethnic humanity, the Nazis saw that “New Man” as a master race that would dominate the world in terms of racial hierarchy. Hitler personally opposed communism as an ideology even though he found it admirable that Stalin was purging the party of Jewish influence. .“Very similar” in other aspects depends on whether your view of Marxist socialism is a Trotskyite one or not. Failed proletarian revolutions in Europe prompted Stalin’s concept of “Socialism in One Country”, and turned the ComIntern ideology from world revolution to a defensive posture.

For this reason Stalin did NOT see the German Nazi Party as an ideological BFF – far from it. He saw it as a movement that would keep other European states unbalanced and prevent them from uniting and attacking Russia. The NSDAP, for its part, not only blamed the Reichstag fire on communists, and in spite of the non-aggression pact still attempted to disrupt relations between Finland and the USSR in 1940.

Readers may forget that Mr. Evans pulled the greatest dodge of all some years ago when LuAnn et al were about to “graduate”…necessitating the cartoonist sending her off to college, supplying a largely different supporting cast etc. But at the last moment, he let it be known that they were graduating grade school, and would now do an identical high school all over again for as many years necessary.

Heh. Or perhaps Greg was inspired by Joss Whedon. The creator of Buffy and Angel hath sworn on a stack of Bibles that no character he writes shall ever be in a happy relationship. EVER. Quit whining, get over it.

Not that we should just open the floodgates to baboons, or, worse, Australians. Luann and Quill finally advanced from endless flirting to light making out, and within minutes, the U.S. government moved to deport his entirely family, making sure that he keeps his filthy foreign paws off of virtuous American girls.

This scenario brings back some memories, which I related on the comics.com site when Quill was first introduced. It goes like this:.A young fellow from Australia came to the U.S. some 30-40 years ago as an exchange student. He was here about a year and then returned to Australia to make a life for himself. However, while he was here he met a young lady and they dated rather seriously and then they broke it off. After some time in Australia, he realized that he wanted to continue his life with her and he returned to America. By this time, she had developed a romance with another fellow and they were engaged to be married. When he showed up, the engagement collapsed within a few weeks and they were married soon after. They had children and the family spent some time in America and some time in Australia. The first child, a girl, is now married to our son.

Right now I feel the most possible source of romance is a hot relationship between TJ and Ann. Let’s face it. The rest of the cast seems to be suffering from hormone deficiencies.

Doesn’t like long term relationships? So when do Luann’s mom and pop get the divorce? Or when will Brad & Toni break up?

So is it that you don’t like long term relationships or just ran out of ideas where to take this one? Just curious.

As I said, Stalin dealt with Nazi Germany out of political self-interest, not because the two countries were ideologically aligned. Henry Ford was more in love with Hitler than Stalin was, and he was also for complete control when it came to the lives of his workers..FYI. a “non-aggression pact” is about the most passive form of alliance you can come up with, and again, it wasn’t based on any sort of similarity. Also, each side did its level best to undermine the other as soon as the damn thing was signed, so yeah, so much for the love. .You forget that not only was single-party leader Lenin the target of a multiple assassination attempts by various socialist groups, but European states were actively involved in trying to overturn the new revolution five minutes after the Romanovs were out of the Winter Palace. It was this active interference and overt hostility from the rest of the continent that led Stalin to take a defensive posture in the first place. .FYI, there’s no better example of leadership over a huge majority than 300 years of the autocratic and absolute monarchy by the Romanovs – Lenin didn’t invent anything new when it came to leadership, he took charge of a country that was conditioned to be loyal and follow orders from whoever led them. If they didn’t, Dzerzhinsky’s Checka under Lenin was doing the same job the Ochrana had done under the Czar – so it’s a case of “meet the new boss, same as the old boss”..Take a look at what happened in postwar Japan and its transfer of loyalty from Hirohito to MacArthur – its’s the same sort of unwavering and unquestioning devotion. .The “outcomes” were actually different due to those ideological differences – Germany was intent on ethnic cleansing and genocide so that the so-called Master Race could then inhabit the “cleansed” territories. Everyone who was ethnically impure or otherwise seen as a gene pool pollutant was scheduled for the ovens sooner or later. Stalin was suspicious of many ethnic minorities and due to this paranoia they were deported tfrom strategic areas and resettled in Siberia and other inhospitable areas. Assimilation or exile was the aim since these minorities were seen as not being capable of contributing to the socialist struggle, but forced assimilation or containment was the goal, not genocide per se.

I don’t consider “German” to be an ethnicity, but anyone “foreign” was automatically seen as suspect. I don’t want you to think that I’m somehow minimizing or excusing your family’s persecution and murder, my point was that it wasn’t done with the same intent as the exterminations in Germany. However, it doesn’t make your grandparents’ family any less dead, does it?.I was referring to Rom/gypsies, Crim Tatars, Balkars, Chechens, Kurds and others, many of whom were actually indigenous to Russia – it was these groups that were deported en masse and “resettled”. Stalin’s paranoid suspicion of anyone not Georgian, or not him, is pretty apparent when it came to his treatment of the Ukrainians.

One final note:.This strip shows that avoiding the good things in life to avoid the pain of losing them fails because there is still the pain and added to it is the knowledge of the joy which could have been

I’m deleting this strip from my list here, and I’ll probably write my local newspaper to suggest they delete it from their comics page as well. There are a lot of promising new comic writers out there, so strips that have become old, stale and outdated, such as this one, should be pulled so that new writers with fresh stories and ideas can take their place!

The best parts of LuannWorld are the soapbox announcements when someone is leaving the comments area for good. Even Bill who likes to let us know that he’ll check on the rest of us misguided fans at some later date, y’know, to see if the strip’s getting any lamer.

Yup, the music sure sucks at this club so I’ll make sure everyone knows it. I’m leaving now. Ok, I’m at the door. Here I am opening the door. Evervbody? Anyone care to know why I’m leaving? I really mean it. Ok, got one foot out the door now.

    blah-blah-blah…
