It’s a shame. I rarely see kids outside playing anymore. When I was a kid, you couldn’t drag me inside until the 10PM curfew forced me in.

Sadly loads of the kids these days are on smart phones texting or playing video games while sitting outside.

Childhood doesn’t last long Calvin. It’s too short to watch TV. Go play with Hobbes. You won’t be able to forever!

I’m so glad my kids grew up without all the tech stuff. They still love to go camping with their kids. Pass it on!

Why do kids look forward to summer vacation and then spend the day indoors? No wonder Calvin’s mother’s sending his bum outside into the fresh air. ;)

Mom said to “go move around!”, and Calvin said “it’s too real”! So Calvin could go fishing; just take the ‘bait’ and get ‘reel’!

In the summer months, mom never saw us except at meal time. Had to wash our feet in the galvanized tub before bed as we went barefoot all summer.

I try to escape outside sometimes to get away from reality!

Calvin – reality bites, and so do the misquitoes….I didn’t spell that right, did I? Oh well, so much for the joys of geezerdom…

Mom, don’t forget to warn him about the man at the end of the street who has puppies in his van, or the guy with the candy in his pocket, or the football coach.

Reality, what a concept.But as for me, I prefer Regality.

Funny, Calvin must have changed his mind over the years. I have a strip taped to my work desk and my refrigerator with him and Hobbes. He is wearing a Safari hat in the last panel. He says, “Its hot, it’s humid, it’s buggy, there’s no breeze, there’s pollen in the air, BUT WHO CARES, IT’S SUMMER”! My thoughts, EXACTLY!

We were lucky! I, too, was outside, barefoot most of the time, doing all sorts of intersting things all summer, and only came in when it was too dark to see or I was hungry. But that was before “playing outside” meant sexual predators, kidnappers, drugs, and whole host of other realities that exist these days. I have sympathy for kids and for their moms that getting outside to play all summer just isn’t what it used to be. As I said, we were lucky. Just poison ivy (or oak), bee stings, and the occasional snake to watch out for.
