This is fantastic stuff. I can just hear the three musical notes following, “he may not have been able to.” DUM DUm dummmmmm. (Kids today have probably never listened to one entire radio show in their lives. So sad. An imagination is a terrible thing to waste.)
On July 26, 1908, Attorney General Charles J. Bonaparte appointed an unnamed force of special agents to be the investigative force of the Department of Justice. The FBI evolved from this small group. See our History website for more information.
I lived in ND for more than 30 years until last year. One time T.R. single-handedly captured thieves who had stolen a boat (I believe it was three of them) and marched them about 60 miles to the nearest town where they could be locked up. Between that and his service in the Spanish-American War he wasn’t just talk—he walked the walk.
Love how this story is developing, especially Vince’s, “Hey, it’s a gig!”Mike has it right aboout the public’s curiousity overcoming any disapproval over Mumbles’ criminal behavior.Remember, Michael Jackson was considered by most a child molester, but as soon as he died, all’s forgotten (well, not quite all).
One story that I heard was told by our local group of Rough Riders re-enactors. T.R. walked into a bar out west (it may have been in ND), and was hassled by a local bully. Teddy asked one of the patrons to hold his glasses, thrashed the man soundly, and threw him out into the snow. He got his glasses back, and treated all present to a round of drinks.
Of some interest to the current tale is some INFO from Vic Wichert’sDick Tracy Encyclopedia !Those who may remember The Painted Lady (1969) tale, may recall that in two Sunday pages in March (1969), Gould had a Singing Grouo performing in her restaurant called - the Mumbles 5 ! One assumes there is some connection !
Does anyone know- was the Johnny Adonis character originally modeled after Tom Selleck’s Magnum PI persona? He sure does remind me of Tom in these panels.
That would be Charles Bonaparte, who was descended from Napoleon I’s youngest brother Jerome and his first wife Elizabeth Patterson of Baltimore. Jerome’s marriage to Elizabeth was annulled on Napoleon’s order and she later obtained a divorce in Maryland.
What a conicidence! I just got my Dick tracy weekly #29 and #30,and there is Dot View! She’s looking good! Does She still think about Tonsils? How about bringing Matty Munkie as well.
The phrase, “No one is above the law” was one of Teddy Roosevelt’s sayings back in his NYPD days..The full phrase is;“NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW OR BELOW IT”
Night,.Re your comment below:.“It [the FBI] started out as the B.I. or Bureau of Investigation and later it was federalized.”.The Bureau was always part of the federal government. It wasn’t federalized. It merely added the somewhat redundant prefix “Federal” to its title..BTW, as Dan points out, today, in addition to being Mothers’ Day, is also the first day of National Police Week. And this Tuesday, 15 May, is National Police Memorial Day..Remember to say a prayer for all the real-life Dick Tracys who’ve given their lives protecting and serving.

I guess panel two settles the question about whether Tess is a receptionist or a private investigator for the agency.
