Michael Anthony Monsoor was born on this day in 1981. He joined the U.S. Navy in 2001 and became a Navy SEAL in 2004. He was assigned to Delta Platoon, SEAL Team Three which went to Iraq in 2006. During a joint operation with Iraqi soldiers, an attacker threw a grenade which bounced off his chest onto the roof they were on. He was the only member of his team in position to get clear in time, but instead he quickly smothered the grenade with his body. He died half an hour later, having saved the lives of his team and several Iraqi soldiers as well. He received the Medal of Honor for his selfless bravery, and the new guided missile destroyer USS Michael Monsoor will proudly bear his name. Monsoor would have been 31 today.

So why does Wikipedia show his BD as April 12?

(Had to look up VG. A country singer/songwriter. Today I invented a word for a gag that must be researched: a Goog. Feel free to use it.)

It is nice for the Navy to honor a true celebrity instead of the those famous for things that are not truly important.

At the pint in life where I don’t know anything about the people on the magazine covers by the checkout line. Happy about it.

Thomas Hobbes (as every tiger knows)! Originator of the line "[The “State of Nature”] is solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." Elihu Yale! Joseph Lister! Booker T. Washington! Cubby Broccoli! Roger Corman! Frank Gorshin! Peter Greenaway!

And, ummm…. Well, the last person on Wikipedia I’ve heard of is Paula Cole, b. 4/5/68…

pschearer: I was learning German from neighbors before we moved when I was three. I tried learning Japanese in Richmond, BC, but didn’t get beyond a few kendo terms. If more people would learn a few languages instead of trying to force English on the world, there would be fewer wars. Same for the rest of the culture.

On the subject of Monsoor, it should be self-evident that a whole graveyard full of the Honored Dead does nothing to sanctify an ignoble cause. There are German and Japanese war heroes from WWII, who went above and beyond the call of duty in service to their countries. The objectives of the soldier in the field are not the same as the objectives of the leaders who put them there. “Ours is not to reason why, ours is but to do and die,” and it is certainly possible to have a Good Death in service to a Bad Idea.

pshearer, guess I gotta agree with you twice today….but we should always remember fritzoid’s wisdom….And there is no better example of a senseless squander of 5000 of our best people than Iraq. The real crime against humanity was their cynically using the deaths of 911 as an excuse ti invade, and calling the people who thought it was a stupid response to Al Queda’s attacks, unpatriotic. Disgusting….

I’m in middle schools a lot. I hear a lot of names of people I’ve never heard of, but I am more up to speed than most, I guess…I’ve certainly noticed Katie Perry!

Arlo’s way behind this senior citizen. If they were born after 1982, I have no idea who they are, unless they’ve just made headlines getting out of rehab or had some mop-headed rock stars baby. War? That’s just an amplified version of the playground.Whether it be a toy or a diamond mine, somebody wants to take it away from someone and thus the fracas begins.“Oh, and now that we’ve won, here’s our version of how we worship our invisible best friend ! Anyone disagrees, off with their heads! No Kum-Ba-Yahs allowed.”
