Stone Soup by Jan Eliot Val: Joan? What are you doing for dinner tonight? Joan: I'm not sure. Wally's cooking. Val: Again? How'd you get so lucky? Joan: Remember when women pretended they couldn't TYPE so they wouldn't get stuck in secretary jobs? Joan: Well, I pretend I can't cook. Val: You CAN'T cook. Joan: So it's not a stretch!

I thought Val could cook, but because Holly’s old enough to do so, she’s simply delegating – like any manager (or wise woman).
Oh, and saw this on a T-shirt a few months back: “I didn’t say it was your fault, I said I was going to blame you.”

Bingo! In high school, I refused to take even a simple typing course for fear of being tracked into secretarial courses…

Val can sorta cook (she tries lots of things with okra), Evie tends to use lots of mini-marshmallows and Joan does a mean breakfast of pancakes! (or maybe it was waffles…)

I took typing in high school so I could type my college papers. Made a lot of money typing other student’s papers too. Then when computers started appearing on everyone’s desk, I was ahead of the game. Just had to learn the programs, not where all the keys were.

We all have things we like to do better or things we’re just not good at, so as long as it all gets done and everyone’s happy, who cares if it’s male or female?

My dad cooked in the Navy and various restaurants. So when my mother wasn’t availlable, he cooked the meal.

I can cook a few things, esp. eggs, coffee, and stuff in a can.

Not taking typing so that you won’t be a secretary? Being a waitress or dishwasher is a much better job, huh?

My father was in the Marines and then was career Army. He thought that as a boy it was very important that I learn to cook, so he started teaching me, and so did my mother. When my wife became pregnant with our last child and could not cook without becoming ill, I decided to just take over the everyday cooking (even though she insisted she keep trying). That was 12 years ago and I am still the cook and completely enjoy it. My father told me that if you want to be a man, you need to first take care of your family and their needs, so why not enjoy it at the same time?

An old man in my father’s office told him that I’d never make it through college because I’d get married first. “They all do that!” (This was in the early ’50’s.) My father believed him, andwanted me to take a quick secretarial course, get a job in Washington, and marry a rich, hot-shot lawyer. Trouble was, I’d inherited my father’s bumble-fingeredness and couldn’t type worth a darn, much less take shorthand. (Thank goodness for computers, which let me make corrections as I go along.) So I made it through college with a B. A. and M. A., taught English a few years, and married an engineer. Didn’t like teaching English, got a degree in Junior College Teaching with a Specialty in Psychology (because couldn’t get in school of psychology) and became a Voc. Rehab. counselor. Know thyself.
