    Strange, I thought the perpose of the union was to “Provide for the common good”. I’m sure I read that somewhere.

    “Welfare” meant well-being, and survival. The founding fathers didn’t WANT debtor prisons, or people being “criminals” for being poor, thus “general welfare” didn’t mean specifically a check, but it DID mean they didn’t intend folks, even slaves and indentured servants, be just kicked to the curb to die. And, yes ONLY property owners and males were allowed to vote or hold office as “citizens”, but gee, our country “grew up” and developed higher standards of “civility”. Well, not so much the extreme right, who even Eisenhower wouldn’t recognize as “Americans” intend on preserving freedom, and justice for all.

    The United States of America. The title is becoming a joke. To keep it Strong and True the American people have to rise up and take it back. We did it with Great Britain and its time to do it again. We need to take our great country from big business and greedy politicians.

    While “charity” is a nice concept, when folks pay more (I’d use “give”, but it’s mandatory for many) to their religion than to support their nation, the nation’s books are hard to balance.

    @Eryx

    For the same reason that John Heinz-Kerry, Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and every other ignored-by-the-media rich Democrat ran when they ran. Apparently, only non-democrats get rich for a bad reason or by bad decisions.
