Actually, agricultural groups generally fight daylight savings time. (for one thing, cows don’t tend to want to milked one hour differently).

The reason used to be energy conservation — the idea is that you’d use less energy on lights in the evening. BUT that was in the prewar era. Studies done when Indiana switched showed that DST actually uses more energy now — because people air condition those hours, and air conditioning uses more electricity than fewer lights saves.

Daylight savings time was established to keep the war machine going. Remember the overhead windows in all the factories. After WWII, air conditioners were first installed in factories and other businesses and daylight savings remained to send people home earlier and swelter there instead of staying in a cooler place for another hour. You will notice that there started to be a difference between the starting times of Management and Labor (the managers came in later). Then came the energy crunch of the early seventies. Does anyone else remember the one year DST lasted all winter? It was during the Nixon administration. It SO didn’t work. Now we are in a technological age where a lot of equipment is computer controlled and the computers need to be kept on and cooled 24/7. Adding the human cost factor (lights and body heat compensation) is minimal now. I agree that DST should come to an end.
