Ironically, the first thought to pop into mind as I read this was that the first sentence should be “What do you have” or “What have you got”, not “What do you got”.

It should be two words when you write something like, “Everything will be all right now.” But there is nothing wrong with writing “alright” in dialog — as in a cartoon. But in dialog, there should be a way to indicate the correct pronunciation (depending on what part of NY/NJ your character comes from) when saying, “alright alright already.” Is it “al” or “all”?

All right, usually pronounced as if it were a single word, probably should have followed the same orthographic development as already and altogether. But despite its use by a number of reputable authors, the spelling alright has never been accepted as a standard variant, and the writer who chooses to risk that spelling had best be confident that readers will acknowledge it as a token of willful unconventionality rather than as a mark of ignorance.

    Yup! Stephen is alright!

from Merrian-WebsterDefinition of ALRIGHT: all right

Usage Discussion of ALRIGHTThe one-word spelling alright appeared some 75 years after all right itself had reappeared from a 400-year-long absence. Since the early 20th century some critics have insisted alright is wrong, but it has its defenders and its users. It is less frequent than all right but remains in common use especially in journalistic and business publications. It is quite common in fictional dialogue, and is used occasionally in other writing <the first two years of medical school were alright — Gertrude Stein>.

“Alright” [“Al, who”?] is not all right. Cartoon-Pastis is just prostituting himself to the ignorant masses who have swallowed the kool-aid of descriptive rather than prescriptive grammar. This reduces mutual comprehension and increases confusion and misunderstanding and the secondary malefactions to which they may lead. It is a crime. I am glad that RL-Pastis can use cartoon-Pastis in this deliciously ironic humorous tweak of our cultural biases.

It’s alright Ma, I’m only bleeding.

Sisyphos, if you insist upon prescriptive grammar, you’re going to be pushing that boulder uphill for a LONG time. Language changes over time and, as H C Wap suggests, if you’re bent out of shape by “alright” why don’t you push for the “correction” of “altogether” and “already” (or “almighty”, for that matter)?

    Don’t think twice, it’s alright.

I have no doubt in my mind that there’s some grammar nazi out there that felt he needed to write in to the newspaper to ‘correct’ this. I’ve seen then often enough online, so I’m sure there are still a few out there reading newspapers.
