Knowledge has grown so enormously in this days, it’s impossible to know everything, you can sit and learn all days and nights long. It’s better to beleeve in god and trust he will do it for you, seek friens, who have an other part of knowledge and work together with them!

Do people call Fox News ‘Faux" News because they don’t toe the line with every other news source? I’d love to see some examples of lies they have told. I’m talking about the news reporting, not the opinion shows, e. g. O’Reilly Factor.

@cdward:You “look beyond your own boarders” – that’s nice – what are you doing, running a rooming house? Oh, you probably meant “look beyond your own borders” – perhaps a little conservative, old fashioned schooling would help us all spell better and know the definitions of the words we are using.

Having made the above comment, because the constant mixing up of homonyms in these comments drives me nuts, I want to say that I totally agree with you that print journalism is far better than t.v. for getting in-depth information – although, it must be admitted that some newspapers have a definite slant as well. I guess the best thing is to use multiple sources – and then we run into the problem of enough time, with information overload.

It’s funny in a make believe comic strip, but it’s sad when the adult liberal establishment pushes this agenda of not counting scores in kids baseball games because it might make the kids on the losing end feel bad. Well, that’s the way life works. Learn to accept that you may have failed, but be proud of the fact that you tried hard and want to improve in your next opportunity. Embrace the goals of being the best and we will all benefit from each of us trying to improve our own lot if life and not dumb down the process of competition.

And yet they have a larger audience than all the other cable news channels combined! I used to be of the same mind set until I forced myself to watch for one month and compare with what the other outlets were reporting. Changed my mind. They also have more liberal contributors than the others have conservative contributors.

Calvin has the makings of a great philosopher, right up there with the best of them, Socrates, Plato. The political comments on a comic strip, liberal or conservative, suck.

Liberal or conservative bias depends on where you place the center. So find some well read, educated folks to investigate current events and compare them to history. Make sure they have access to as much information as possible.

Results: Main stream media and college teachers who generally come down as Liberals because that’s what they believe is true. This also shows Obama is firmly in the center and modern GOP is sliding off the map.

There are valuable lessons to be learned by NOT getting a prize if it is not earned. Not only does it motivate one to think, plan, practice, try, refine—and so—succeed; it teaches one NOT to be satisfied with only being along for the ride. Plus, it teaches one to respect another’s success!

I think Mr. Watterson here is commenting on the self-esteem that comes from not facing one’s weaknesses (Calvin remaining ignorant rather than doing homework) rather than the more lasting self-esteem that comes from progress through real achievement (if Calvin were to do homework).

I must have been doing something wrong as a kid. I thought school was about learning the basics so that I could learn what I wanted to know. ie: learning to read so I could read about all those nasty things my parents didn’t want me to hear from them

@Mitchtheone:I think he was talking about the way the word is pronounced, not it’s meaning. I think he meant that people are under the mistaken impression that the “x” at the end of the word somehow makes it a pun with the word "fox’, and he was pointing out that, since it’s not pronounced that way, the force of the pun is lost. I suppose some people know how to pronounce it and some people don’t.

A “will-not” (as opposed to a “can-do”) attitude like this when I was a kid would have gotten me a failing grade — yes, grade! — in school and a paddling at home by my dad!

Kids today are coddled. No one keeps score or gets bad grades because it can “damage” their self-esteem and make them feel bad about themselves. Well, here’s a newsflash for all these kids, teachers, parents, etc.: one day, these kids are going to grow up and enter into the real world . . . where no one’s going to give a rats patootie about their self-esteem issues! How are they going to survive when they grow up if they don’t know how to win without gloating (because “winning” is what they’ve always done) and lose without pouting, crying and throwing a temper tantrum because someone’s being “mean” to them? These kids today need to be properly prepared for the real world that will be here before they know it — and no one’s doing them any favors by removing all their incentive to strive for success if there’s no “penalty” for losing.

Hobbes voices my feelings too. I never could understand why a kid who studies hard and does well in school is called a “nerd” or a “geek”. Does that mean it is cool to be stupid?

I can’t believe that everybody realizes Calvin is a preposterous, fictional character … UNTIL he suddenly says something that (later in American history) became a political hot button! Then, all of a sudden, folks are saying he proves the state of US schools in current times? He’s not only a serious academic authority now, but he’s also no longer 30 years ago? C’mon, folks! Just wake up!

I quite understand how everyone seems to revere George Carlin-I happened to see him on Youtube today commenting on this very thing.

Looks like both he and Bill Watterson could see what was coming. There is no corellation between self esteem, intelligence, accomplishment or any other positive thing you care to name. Even violent behavior. As it happens, Sociopaths tend to think quite highly of themselves.
