Braver with the school bully than the girl that likes him. He needs to see a hypnotist or something.

I think Gunther needs the MacMruphy treatment from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest to get him to the point where he is not a babbling idiot around Rosa.

“Brave” is relative. “Dork” is absolute.

Greater men than Gunther have been turned into bumbling, mumbling nervous wrecks. When they come into the presence of a beautiful woman!

i think what some readers of this strip is missing is that the responses and reactions gunther is displaying is a lot more common than said readers would assume. greg is sensitive to this and displaying gunther’s reactions in very normal ways. i can think of at least a couple of instances in my own high school days that, upon looking back, i wished i had displayed a similar level of bravado in seeing a situation involving a girl i liked. it wasn’t until my college years i was able to “man up”, as it were.

Gunther, for all his fumbling with fear of saying something wrong to Rosa, has by his mighty deeds cemented her respect and fondness for him. Things are looking good for our gentle dorky plaid lad….

It’s easier for Gunther to let is emotions go on the jerk, he doesn’t care what that guy thinks about him.He does care what Rosa thinks.

Dirk’s was His Brute Strength.And while I suspect that Butterball is really a COWARD at heart that has his boys backing him up, I also think that He has something else up his sleeve. Like maybe weathly, influential, Banker Parents, that HOLD the Mortgage on Gunther’s house.

Not the lobotomy that Mac got. The young guy that was afraid of girls. He stuttered aomething awful. Mac cured him by having him spend the night with a very understanding lady. Really upset the head nurse.

It is so sad that our morality has slidden so far that it is wrong to be a virgin. Many of our young men and women are waiting for sex until marriage. Its a good thing. And Gunth will pull out of this. Its his first crush.

How many of you have teens who are still virgins? Do you call them losers for holding out? I’d rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy!

I can sympathize. I always got ‘tongue-tied’ around cute girls. I was very shy and backward, so I can see where Gunther is at. Rosa seems to like and understand that trait in him, so she will be patient.

Yes, Rosa must be used to predators and have developed coping skills— yet even we feminists appreciate and need friends to watch our backs!I bet she finds the stuttering the last panel adorable. Go, Virgins! You are healthy and wise!

P.S. – We’re having Carnival in N’Awlins now— come on down! During Mardi Gras week it’s crowded & the entire city shuts down, but come now and you can both see parades and take in the city life.

To all those “dis’ing” on Gunth because of his awkwardness whenever he’s around Rosa: do you even remember being at that stage of your life? It WAS awkward! Most of us were just getting over the “I hate girls” stage of boyhood, and trying to learn how to act like a man. But then the rest were just learning to be jerks like Mr. Greaseball, here. And a lot of them never get past that stage of development.

Some people call it “twitterpated” :)

First: Gunther didn’t hit him, he bumped him with his backpack from behind, somehow with enough force to knock the guy down without falling over himself. Secondly: This is not necessarily brave- Gunther didn’t tell the guy to leave Rosa alone, didn’t tell him to stop, didn’t confront him or make a stand, he just bumped into the guy from behind and then passively-aggressively pretended the whole thing was an accident, like a little kid. The guy probably has no idea why Gunther was lurking behind him bumping him with his backpack in the first place and had no idea that Gunther was interested in Rosa-he probably thought Gunther was just being a passive aggressive, socially maladjusted nerd. The fact that Rosa is actually impressed by this entire ridiculousness makes me think that maybe they really are meant to be together.

Notice she touches him gently in the second panel. That’s what surprised him and disarmed his bravado.

When it counts, Gunther is brave and it is nice that Rosa noticed and told him so. He bumbles and fumbles but I find that charming.

Wow. All I can say is: Big hair, no wait, HUGE hair, and tiny head… lol. Rosa is really pretty though.

Gunther’s doing pretty good for a teenage boy; I knew some who were more like that bully and kept getting into trouble. Give me someone like Gunther ANY day of the week.

He’s like the Maple Leafs (my fave hockey team) all up in their grill in periods 1 and 2 (or games 1-3) than he chokes up … haha

Now she’s making Big Gunther blush!

Gunther has proven that he can be brave when the need arises. The girl he likes was in danger, and he dealt with the situation in such a way that could put gun dealers out of business.Loaded Guns, or Loaded Backpacks? You decide…Now that the danger has left, he can go back to being the modest person he really is.

Ah, jeeze, man up will ya.

I like panel #2. With Rosa’s hand on his arm, they look like a real couple. She should silence his bumbling with a little kiss.

THOSE were My thoughts. I’ve always felt that Rosa was re-introduced in the strip as a “Love-Interest” for Gunther to “get him OUT of the way.”

Sure Gunther/Rosa, Quill/Luann MAY be the “pair-ups” now, but They may Not END that way, IMHO….,
