    Truly advanced for his age, Jan de Bray painted this 50 years before he was born (according to this strip’s author). Others say it was painted in 1675. You can read about it in the first link, where an enlargement is available. Why would they to be surprised to find a painter at a meeting of painters?Proceed with your fantasy.

    @Elderflower, I was a student of art, but alwas found that dutch period lacking in color and boring (I love impressionists and surrealists). I had never noticed before, but the subjects as seen recently here seem to be transfixed by regarding the artist.

    After checking the links (thanks, gents!) I see that as this is the city guild of artists, the portly guy is holding what must be their emblem (so possibly sitting leader) and the one behind him is a self portrait; very interesting. I wish someone would always provide a link or other info, as it makes the comic even more fun!
