Truly advanced for his age, Jan de Bray painted this 50 years before he was born (according to this strip’s author). Others say it was painted in 1675. @Elderflower, I was a student of art, but alwas found that dutch period lacking in color and boring (I love impressionists and surrealists). I had never noticed before, but the subjects as seen recently here seem to be transfixed by regarding the artist.
After checking the links (thanks, gents!) I see that as this is the city guild of artists, the portly guy is holding what must be their emblem (so possibly sitting leader) and the one behind him is a self portrait; very interesting. I wish someone would always provide a link or other info, as it makes the comic even more fun!
