Yesterday it was suggested the original name “Spike Dyke” may be not be politically correct, but I am acquainted with people whose last name is indeed “Dyke.” Should I ask if they’ve changed it to “Smith?” If this is the same character as Spike Dyke, I’m glad to see his return! Thanks!

I’m also happy to see Spike again whatever his last name is. He could become a regular for my money.

Trivia: Before his appearance yesterday, Spike was last seen on April 9, 1957.

Spike Dyke, a parody of spike jones a famous odd-ball band leader, appeared in the Sketch Paree arc. Changing his name is politically if not historically correct.

Spike appeared in two separate arcs, Sketch Paree in 1949 and the Kitten sisters in 1957.

WAIT A GOSH-DARN MINUTE HERE! Tracy’s in the middle of a manhunt, and he’s watching Spike Smith on YouTube? That’s just wrong!

I wonder if there might be another explanation for the name change. In 1959, when he last appeared, Spike Jones was still alive and still working with the “City Slickers.” In fact I think he might even have had a TV show on the air at that time. In that circumstance a visual caricature would probably be enough for most people to get the parody. Thing is that Spike Jones died in 1965. It may be that someone thought that they needed more than a visual clue to know who the character was meant to be satirizing.

Why did Spike change his name?My guess would be because of the new meaning given to it.There is also a rumor that his name actually is Spike Smith, but he used Spike Dyke as a stage name. I have no idea why he would do that, Smith isn’t exactly a common name after all, like Jones. WHAT, IT IS! Oops, my bad. (grin)Another reason could be this guy
