Regarding yesterday’s comments about IDW’s Complete Dick Tracy and vol’s 9 & 10 out of print and so expensive.I had the same problem with Volume 8. When Amazon could not fill my order, I purchased volume 8 new on ebay for about $40.00. The seller on ebay did not know the book was out of print, as private sellers on Amazon wantedup to $1,000. Be eventually, IDW did a second edition of Vol. 8 and I suspect the same will happen withvol’s 9 and 10. So, be patient. I am sure the two volumes will be back again.

    Good Day everyone!!!!

In yesterday’s strip, Mina carrying Mr. Decopolus reminded me of the old Universal Horror Movies from the 40’s and 50’s where the monster in that case would be carrying off the beautiful young girl.

And Sam, are you trying to get out of your vacation so you don’t have to be stuck in a car, travelling with your wife????

First, Wendy Wichel; now, Ted Tellum. All the media flaks want a piece of Tracy this week! Maybe Dick should run off and join Sam’s family vacation!

Lizz’s eyes in panel 2 remind me of the very strange way Gould used to draw her eyes, which renews my appreciation for Joe’s art.

To one of my favorite cops, Jim Doherty – Thanks for the info on Mina. In today’s real-life world, Mina and he boss usually are pretty good at getting their “clients” to change their wills, too. Right behind the Nurse’s Station is another office housing their “House Lawyer” who assists the patients with their legal things, like changing their wills, leaving their estates to sham charities that they have control over. Layered LLC’s that the DA can’t untangle.

@safeway: I didn’t know that about the IDW reprints. But I wouldn’t bet on them coming back into print…they may, but there’s no way of knowing. My own cautionary tale: I collected Fantagraphics’ printing of Prince Valiant (which started in the 80s). What apparently happened is the further they got into the 40 volumes, the fewer people bought them, and the lower the press runs were. I didn’t pick up the last half-dozen volumes when they came out, and those are now going for $100+ on eBay, much more than the early volumes in the series. So I don’t know what’s going to happen with the reprints, but what I learned is if you’re going to collect a series, do it from the getgo. Sometimes you get lucky and it gets remaindered, sometimes not.

(before someone nips me on it, yeah, the whole run is 50 volumes, but the first 40 have Hal Foster art, which is why they’re more sought after)

Ted Tellum was an Arthur Godfrey clone who used Wormy as a radio voice in the early 50s. He’s now about 110 years old, but still working. I guess Wormy will show up in conjunction with his appearance in the IDW Tracy release. How symettrical

From Dick Tracy’s expression in the last Panel, I can surmise that Ted Tellum is not someone to whom he wants to talk. I suspect that Mr. Tellum does not like the way the Police operate.

Also, while I prefer to see this strip in glorious black and white, the second panel looks great in color. The bow & neckties contrast beautifully with Dicks’ & Sams’ shadow profile.

All the good old police procedurals included some personal life, slice-o-life things, like Sgt. Friday developing an itch, or his partner going on a diet. Nothing wrong with making Sam more of a fully-developed character, or introducing Liz’s girlfriend, or whatever.

Sam’s always had Julie, his daughter, since his first appearance in 1948! On Dec. 26, 1948, Sam shows Dick Tracy a picture of his daughter: “My family will be here next week. That’s my daughter, Julie, smart kid.” Nearly one year later, in perhaps the most famous Christmas strip in Dick Tracy’s history, Sam introduces wife, Marge, and daughter, Julie, in the flesh!
