The name was coined by Fred Hoyle, one of the theory’s biggest critics. He named it derisively. Something like, “You’re saying the universe began with some…big bang.” And the name stuck.
I believe scientists have been trying to change it for years – because in fact the big bang was neither big nor a bang. Obviously, it was very small and no sound was involved.

Ha, ha, on an physics test once, one of the questions was to write a paragraph about the Big Bang. I began with the word "big bang… and later replaced the word with “Horrendous Space Kablooie” just for fun… and my teacher actually got the reference and gave me a smiley face on my paper! :)
