Bill Watterson wrote this comic while he was in the middle of the fight with his syndicate over the licensing of Calvin and Hobbes. He was mocking how he could make a big stand about his refusal to compromise, but it wouldn’t have the slightest bearing because, at the time, the syndicate held all the power in their contract.
