What do you mean readying itself in a bid? China is already taking action! It is squashing Tibet, it’s threatening Taiwan, and its taking aggressive economic action to replace the dollar with the yuan.

I don’t understand why China would want to attack Taiwan. It was formed by dissidents and dissidents are still welcome there. It is a tiny island and population compared to mainland China.

@Scott: 2007 was TWO years ago. But it is not surprise that the right has problems with math.

Best example: We have to sell the US to China in order to pay for the biggest military in world history. Hey: It did work for the roman empire. It is simply to big to fail.

It was not that long ago that the U.S.A. was the largest exporter of manufactured goods and the largest creditor nation. Thanks to the free-market capitalists, killing off our own worker class was too important. So now we are the largest importer of manufactured goods and the largest debtor nation. The jobs won’t return until we restore “FAIR” trade, charge the same kind of tariffs that China charges us, and start making things again!

And how, pray tell, are we supposed to do that, Mr. Hasty? Nobody can force China into doing anything anymore. When we can’t even win in Afghanistan with our military might, how can we back up any economic threat to China? When the Chinese become greedy and covet the material things like Americans, there will be an enormous demand on world crude. To feed their growing economy, they will go to any length to secure their share of a finite amount of crude oil. And with their military muscle, they will win. We cannot in your words “make things again” if we cannot get the oil.

Bruce, agree with your overall point, but not your comments on oil and solar. The ANWR oil that the GOP kept talking about would keep us going for six months. There’s reason to think that we have reached “peak oil” worldwide, which means its only going to become scarcer and more expensive. So we need to get a move on, in efficiency and in new tech! We used to be the world leader in solar power technology, until Reagan killed the funding for research. Now the Germans and Japanese are the leaders. As for wind, the big players are Siemens, ABB, and GE. The first two are European firms…but at least Ford has hybrids now.

The US consumes 19.5 million barrels of oil per day; China consumes 7.8 million barrels of oil per day. China has 4.34 times the population of the US. If…….WHEN China consumes oil at the same rate as the US, it will need 4.34 x 19.5 million barrels per day, or about 84 million barrels per day. Total world production per day is 85 million barrels. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure that something has to give. The US imports 57% of its daily production. The 57% we need CANNOT be miraculously found in the US. I happen to be a geologist and I know it ain’t there, Bruce.

I agree China’s not stuck, we can’t negotiate with them when we’re doing well and when we are not doing well. Here’s a thought that hasn’t taken off, buy American made, oh yeah we don’t have factories anymore.

Great Toon TT, But as usual, the comments go beyond the toon, Bob Hasty is correct, the Free Market Capitalists destroyed the working and middle class people in America. Mr/Ms burenar, Bob Hasty is not saying we need to start making things that involve oil, because the oil is NOT there. This is the 21st. century. It’s time for people like bruce4671 to realize that the oil in Mother Earth is FINITE. We need CHANGE! The Right Wing and their ilk just think we can do business as usual. Wake Up America!!!

Thanks for the very clear numbers, burenar. Nicely put. My indicator is whether people get interested in the Canadian “oil sands,” which only happens when prices go well over $50, since it’s so expensive to get oil out of shale.

«China is busily recruiting trading partners from all around the world, and securing sources of oil, gold, and other natural resources from many different countries.» Wow, criminal behaviour in the extreme ! Hope our good Christian «scottyfreitas» will nuke’em - and quick, before they stop purchasing those US Treasury bills !…
