A similar story involves the singer Cafarelli, who, upon being presented with a gold snuffbox sent by the French king, remarked that he had been sent much better snuffboxes from others. The king’s messengers protested, “But such presents are for noble ambassadors of state!”

“Then let the noble ambassadors sing for His Majesty!” Cafarelli retorted. “Cafarelli will be silent!”

When this was repeated to the king, he sent Cafarelli another present: a passport to take the bearer back to Italy, to be used within three days.
