Since Calvin is all about immediate gratification, no, he has no time to finish all six boxes. From his point of view he should’ve done that yesterday.

You whine and promise unlimited chores done for the asking for a month so they’ll buy the three boxes you need on their next shopping trip. Dump all the cereal in gallon ziplock bags or Tupperware bowls back then and order the beanie! That’s what I’d do when I was a kid anyway. Luckily though back then most cereal came with toys inside as well and some came with records on the back that you could cut out and they actually played. I still have 4 or 5 records in between my old 45’s. The good old days!

    Suggestion to GoComics :

Quickly put a Turing No. entry before the posting is accepted. This will stop automated posting. But still will not stop manual posting.

Put a cap on the size of the postings added for all comics every day. Most people post only a few lines in each cartoon anyway. Even if they post a long comment on one strip they will not likely post such a long one in other comics. If someone exceeds this limit, all their comments would be deleted.

Posting identical messages in more than one strip should indicate that the message is a spam. That should cause deleteion of all such messages.

Please post your feedback on the above.

Better yet, simply flag and make no comment. The Go people do react to the flags. All the comments serve no real purpose for the gang of us who simply come here to read, share and enjoy.

As a kid I loved those cereal offers.

Good morning to all of you.

vibjyor, your comment is too long and needs to be shortened or we will flag it as ‘spam’. (haha)

Seriously, decent suggestions but I think the spammers will disappear as quickly as they came. (hope hope)

    …………………………………..

ps: This forthcoming storyline on the Beanie is one of my all time favs!

Can someone explain flagging. And can someone tell me if American youngsters really did wear those hats with the little propellers on the top. I always wanted one as a kid but you could never find them in England.

I had a Beany Hat with propeller - but no battery. When I was a kid (in the 60’s) The Beany & Cecil (the Sea Sick Sea Serpent) was popular. A clip from YouTube:

    kimlay,

When I asked about flagging Burgundy2 explained,

“If you feel someone’s comments are inappropriate, you can click on the flag button at the bottom. The computer will ask if you really want to flag and you can proceed. What this does is bring the comment to the attention of the forum mediators, and if they decide the comment is not appropriate, it will be deleted. If it’s really inappropriate, the commentor may end up invited to leave Gocomics.

I think if you flag too much, it could cause trouble (boy who cried wolf syndrome).

I usually reserve flagging for commentors who insult other commentors. It’s a wonderful tool to get rid of trolls.”

GoComics has a list of inappropriate material under the Terms and Conditions section of the Help & FAQ listed at the bottom of the page. (It is much clearer than the first time I read it.)

This one reminds me of George Carlin: ‘Sending away’ was a, a magical phrase. ‘What are you doing?’ ‘I’m sending away. Sending away for something, and they’re going to send it back.’ You picture Battle Creek, Michigan in your mind. ‘Say, this is for Master George Carlin—get that in the mail right away!’

I remember as a child, how exciting it was to send in the offers on stuff. And the memories it brought back when our teenager was around Calvin’s age & would get all excited about colelcting the proofs of purchase to send away for the stuff on the back of the cereal & waffle boxes.

Grazer - I agree,… the upcoming series is in the all-time great category. This is what got me hooked on the strip way back when. (And so happy I did so too,… some of my happiest memories are sharing Calvin and Hobbes with my son as he was growing up…..) Pure genius,.. and if nobody has said thank you recently, Mr. Watterson,… I’d like to do so now……

does anyone remember the ice cream bars that had the plastic sticks with the holes so you could make stuff with them like tinker toys.

Of course to make anything cool you had to have a lot of sticks , and to get a lot of sticks you had to eat allot of ice cream bars in a kind of vicious circle

i liked those cereal box offers too, unfortunately the offers usually expired before i could get the 4 proof of purchase seals and the handling fee together so i missed some really neat stuff

but then i found some of those neat items at a store near downtown a few months after the offer was over

priorities!– what’s more important: a minor heart infraction or a beanie with a propeller and a star on front?

vibjyor, your suggestions almost got to gocomics, but alas, they were flagged as being too suggestive

If you eat four boxes of chocolate-frosted sugar bombs, you might get more than a ‘minor’ heart infarction. You also might get higher than a beanie with a propeller will take you. BTW, trying to understand the following dictionary definition might give you a minor heart infarction: infarct n. A sharply limited region of necrosis and hemorrage in an organ, resulting from obstruction of the local circulation by a thrombus of embolus. P.S. It isn’t really that hard after you read it a few times.

Many years ago when cereal was “pure”, one could buy a box of Nabisco Shredded Wheat. The inside contained things to cut out, color, and put together, like farms, etc.

    I agree with Yukoner.

I can’t stand Captcha codes and, I quit everything that made me use one.

Flag the spam and comment on the comic. Twice the normal amount of comments, all saying “FLAGGED!!!!!” was unnecessary, and tedious to get through on every single comic.

One guy is out there saying “go to the site and fill their mailbox with messages…” NO! Do NOT go to the spam addresses, unless you have a lot of money to have your comuter restored from worms, and viruses!

I could eat 4 boxes of Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs in two days when I was a kid. I was a skinny little kid who didn’t like anything except dessert. It was work to get through half a hotdog, but I LOVED my “Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs”. I loved reading the boxes. I loved the free (useless) toy inside the box, and I would have sent in the box tops for the beanie that inevitably wouldn’t work.

Dunno about eating too much sugar to produce compensatory beats and pauses. Mine does it from stress, caffeine, salt, and Biaxin. I take some extra Rhythmol and eventually it stops. I use the med for Afib. Dunno what Tigers need. If Calvin ate a box of Sugar Bombs along with a can of Mountain Dew we might not see him for a week, and neither would his parents….

Tiger palpitations usually occur as they close in on prey. Somehow I don’t think sugar bombs qualify.

Mine was Nestle’s Chocolate Quick, for a Kodak Hawkeye instamatic camera. With flash. And a film cartridge. I think I still had to send in $8. I still have the camera!

I still have a great melanite Toucan Sam cereal bowl. And I got a stuffed Toucan Sam approx 8” and very compatible with teddy bears in 1963.

I think it was mind-broadening for a kid to send away for stuff and wait three weeks and get it from far away. Since the Internet and 24/7 TV, it’s probably nothing but boring.

Shredded Wheat still tastes exactly as it did 50 years ago (when I hated it because it tasted like just plain wheat). It is hard to get in the crumble-able bales, but the spoon size still has the same 1 (count ‘em, one) ingredient it always did, and I think just plain wheat is a fine, food-like flavor and a great relief to eat.

Continuing with Mrs. Luke’s comments DO NOT reply to a spam. They may very well have compromised someone’s computer to send off the spams. Besides getting a virus other problems can occur. My husband used to use a bounce back program to send the spams back and HE got in trouble. The email addresses were hijacked. They accused HIM of sending the spams!
