Today’s lesson: Never make snide comments about a woman wearing horns and carrying a spear.

Why do women get to call each other girls and men are supposed to only call them women?

I once worked in an office where a large number of our clientele were older gentlemen. One woman in our office was insulted because one elderly gent referred to us as “gals” and used endearments like “hun” in a non-threatening, older-gent way. I thought it was sweet, but that one woman was very upset and actually told him to stop (and wasn’t very polite about it: “My NAME is ‘Martha’, and I am N-O-T a ‘gal’!”) I guess I’m not too progressive…and I’m also TERRIBLE with directions!

“You throw like a girl” – insult to male ball players.“What is this, the Powder Puff league? " – insult to male football players.“Girly man” – SNL comedic insult to male weight lifters. And you wonder why many adult women don’t like to be called girls or gals? Certainly, use of the term needs to be taken in context, but as BluePumpkin said, after a certain age, calling a woman a girl can be disrespectful or mocking or both.

I look young enough to be called a girl.
