Lio, don’t necessarily believe those tall tales Old Timers spin for you–especially not the notorious Old Comic Strip Characters!

When I was a kid, we didn’t have none o’ yer fancy fireworks to throw at fish. All we had was harsh language.

“Feckless”, a word you rarely see, also appears today in Dilbert, go figure….

I think the guy’s left leg would more likely be missing instead of the right leg! How did the fish get the left eye and arm, and face, but the right leg?

Such a nice boy visiting the old folks. So respectful…

Brilliant idea! And since he’s an old toon (assuming it’s not just a fish tale), who needs any explanation as to how he got some wounds but not others? :))
This Sunday’s working out pretty good for the Cartoon Physics collection! :D

Sherlock Watson over 14 years ago
Does anyone know if this comic was completely made up, or if there really was a “Feckless Freddie Freckles” back in 1915?

How old would Dondi and Queeny be by now?
Ushindi over 14 years ago
Since they haven’t been mentioned yet, let me raise a glass to ‘Jiggs and Maggie’ (actually ‘Bringing Up Father’), ‘Our Boarding House’ (with the Major and Martha), ‘Out Our Way’…
(Almost forgot to mention - GREAT Lio today!)

I Googled “Feckless freddy freckles” and the only direct hit was Sherlock Watson’s question (above.) The old comic sure looks genuine, though!

Is Gertie about to come by still searching for Walt Wallet?

It had me wondering as well - no such comic BUT James Swinnerton did a comic named “Jimmy” which is virtually identical in appearance to our hero Freddie. Mark aped Swinnerton’s “Jimmy” is my conclusion. Coincidentally, the copy of “Jimmy” I have in my copy of “The Smithsonian Collection of Newspaper Comics” was also from 1915.

By far, the coolest installment of the Lio strip ever, bar none. Even better than the one a couple of years ago in which Charlie Brown paid Lio to rig the football. A classic! Would love to see more like this.
aardvarkseyes over 14 years ago
Perfect, right down to the copyright line in the first panel. Absolutely brilliant.
jnik23260 over 14 years ago
“Feckless Freddie” is completely lifted from “Little Jimmy”. And those wounds could be from other adventures!

Mark you should also be working at the Cartoon Network! Or do a Christams Special with Lio!
