This strip is 15-25 years old. Does anyone let an 8 y/o kid go to town alone any more? We did back in the dark ages and are better off for it, but now it seems thay are raised in bubbles.
It’s refreshing to see a mother encourage her kid to walk instead of being driven. Heck, some kids are driven to/from school just because they “don’t like” the school bus.
In the little town of Chappaqua, New York, where I was raised, we never locked our doors, walked and went everywhere with impunity and never gave a thought to it. Going to New York City was an entirely different matter. Sad the way things are going these days…“…because evil is multiplied…”
What does she have to do? She has to teach her child that not everyone is going to drop what they are doing to cater to his whims. Why would he need to go into town for anyway? All of his needs are supplied by his parents.
My first thought was: “Well . . . duh, Mom!!!!!” But then my next thought was: Calvin is 6 years old. Normally, I’m all for kids getting out and getting some fresh air and exercise. It’s not only better for them than sitting in front of a computer and playing games or updating their Facebook “status” but also because childhood obesity/diabetes is on the rise and becoming a real epidemic in this country. And while I don’t think Calvin’s every whim should be catered to every minute of the day, if he really truly legitimately needs to go to town for something (school-related, for instance), then she should take him (when it’s more convenient for her, of course!). Letting a 6 year old walk to town all by himself is just asking for trouble. There are child predators/molesters/kidnappers/murderers out there in this big world of ours and no town anywhere is completely safe when it comes to people like that. Let a 6 year old walk to town all by himself? You’ve got to be kidding me!
How curious that Calvin can at times lament the rubbish in an empty lot or stare at a tree stump where someone has cut down a tree and say things about the stupidity of Man and at the same time he wants to add to global warming with his laziness. He definitely represents “humanity”.
Calvin and Hobbes has to be the most underrated comic. I mean, not many people know about it, good thing us loyal C and H fans do. I mean, I’m not an 80’s or 90’s kid, but the artwork and philosophy is unlike any other. I can’t understand people who don’t like it. Allmost everyone I know could care less that it was ever made. Sad. It’s one of the best comic strips ever, a rarity to be treasured.

I love walking, do 4 miles most days. The best is when it’s like 20 degrees out…ah so refreshing!
