Why is it everytime I try to explain that someone is wasting their time trying to smell tulips, they say everything I speak about is sexual or asexual?
Yeah…listen all you people of the world..stop annoying Calvin the bold…he is a BUSY guy……he has to watch his favourite tv show, get rid of Suzie, run his club…..loads of work….
Calvin is taking the expression literally, as most young children would. Ironically, he is actually very good at stopping and smelling the roses, in the metaphorical sense, by frequently getting lost in his imagination.
Bees have a great occupation, because they get to stop and smell the roses while they are at work. For those of us who aren’t as fortunate with our jobs, today’s strip is a great reminder for other times.
Incidentally, research into the honey bee genome has found that honey bees have a much better sense of smell than fruit flies or mosquitoes, but a much worse sense of taste. It’s always good to have a few of these facts at your fingertips, so that you can impress people when you meet them at social gatherings. (Sample icebreaker: “So, I recently learned about some surprising findings from a comparative genome study researching olfactory receptors in flying insects……..)
LeslieAnne should be able to use that commenter Hobbes’ ‘icebreaker’ when she goes to a fishing party on the pond in the middle of winter.
Calvin would be on thin ice trying that sort of thing with Susie, especially since he already knows her.
You should always ‘bee’ careful when smelling roses. It’s quite the thorny subject today.
Young people really do have way too busy lifestyles today. I don’t know how they find time to just enjoy being a kid!
Besides, what on TV is worth your time to watch these days anyway?
“Stop and smell the roses” is such a subjective expression. He may not care for flowers, but the art and magic of television represents it’s own beauty, as do any of the arts.
The programs he watches are surely filled with the talented work of many artistic individuals including writers, actors, animators, musicians, and many more. It takes a lot of work for that ‘flower’ to bloom and grace his senses.
It may seem banal to some, but you can find beauty anywhere, even in Saturday morning cartoons (and comic strips) :o)
I need nature like something to eat. Never I would be able to work only. I must go out and see the trees, flowers, bees, the sky and the clouds and everything what God has created!
dimeadance: If that icebreaker doesn’t work, you can always impress them by saying that in your spare time, you have conversations with a stuffed tiger.
Put the watch on the lesser used wrist, jeffreydahn. No convention, just seems it would last longer that way. Me leftie (not politically), watch rightie! Can only afford one Rolex a year …
Watches are meant to be worn on the LEFT wrist. The stem is always on the right. That way it can be set or wound (older watches had to be wound) without taking it off if.

The real Hobbes is much wiser, and modest as well.

Your right Calvin. Smell the flowers, but do not miss your show. I love gardening as long as it does not interfere with fishing or hunting.

Can’t see Calvin’s watch in panel 3. Maybe it fits loosely and it slides under his sleeve when he raises his arm?

Television will rot your brain, Calvin!!! Someday when you’re older, you’ll be wishing you had the time to literally “stop and smell the roses” again!
kab2rb almost 13 years ago
Calvin depends on the type of TV shows and way you talk this has no effect on you.

I love that Calvin can use the word ‘mundane’ and that Hobbs can respond with vocab like ‘edifying.’ That’s what makes this comic interesting.
sfb5761 almost 13 years ago
Put the watch on the wrist of the hand you don’t write with so it doesn’t get in the way. No propriety one way or the other, just what’s comfortable.
FerBurger almost 13 years ago
All of Calvin’s watches broke at 6:30 A.M. until he started wearing them on his right wrist. They last much longer now.
