I remember Thor (and quite a few others) fighting with The Champion, one after the other. I don’t know how many times Thor has said ”I say thee nay!”, but I know that had to be one of his Top Ten Uses of the Phrase.

Come to think of it, that fight would make a pretty decent featurette.

Never understood why Dad gave us 50 cents (plus a dime for popcorn) to go to the matinee every Saturday. It was only 2 miles so we had to walk.

I remember Rick Wakeman (the keyboard player from Yes, among other things, for those of you too young to remember the golden age of prog rock) playing Thor in “Lisztomania,” Ken Russell’s bizarre biography of Franz Lizst. Wakeman played Thor, and Roger Daltrey played Liszt–quite a combination. As befit Wakeman, the first thing his character said after arising from mad doctor Richard Wagner’s laboratory slab was “stein!!” In particular, beer stein… And when he put out Wagner’s fireplace… well, this new movie’s gonna have a hard time topping that…

LEWREADER: Did ever occur to you that Mom and Dad were having their own Afternoon Delight while you were out of the house? We used to send our two big boys to the drugstore on Saturday morning, and they had to take little brother with them. It was just far enough away!!!!

Movies were a quarter and snacks were usually a dime! I may be older than Lew.

Hey, Wild Sow, I think we saw the Adam West BATMAN movie at that theater on Third Street. And I remember seeing EL DORADO there with Dad.

Two bits for a Saturday Matinee sounds right – “Love me Tender” (1956) and “The Incredible Shrinking Man” (1957) so I was being sent off at age 6/7 under the “care” of the neighbor’s older brother (a scary 9 year old.) Two miles sounds about right too!

Natalie Portman in a comic book movie. I think that already happened with V for Vendetta.

We did indeed, gimmickgenius! I remember going to plenty of Saturday matinees there. And paying a quarter! One week, there was a poster for next week’s attraction, a car race movie called “Grand Prix” (James Garner & Eva Marie Saint, 1966). I remember asking Dad if I could see it. And since I was 7 or 8 at the time and hadn’t learned any French yet, I pronounced “prix” as “P-R-I-C-K-S’!

It took me years to figure out why he laughed so hard!

Just a thought, but I’m pretty sure it should be “A say thee yea”, since the proper spelling of old-english yes is yea, while yay is considered an exclaimation of joy.

When I first encountered this page (I’ve never seen the movie, and I’m not familiar with Norse mythology), I thought Natalie Portman played Freyja, the Norse goddess of (for instance) love and fertility. It would have made sense, since, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, Freyja considered pigs sacred and rode a golden-bristled boar. Actually, she plays Dr. Jane Foster, an eminent astrophysicist.
