I felt like crying when I read this at the time. Having read Peanuts my entire life, it felt like a part of my childhood had ended. I still feel sadness that the strip ended. As much as enjoy the old strips, it feels like a living world ended without closure. Charlie Brown never got to kick the ball. He, Sally and Lucy never saw the people that they pined over returning their love. Rerun never got his dog.

I’m thankful, though, that the Peanuts strips are being republished.

This is the final daily “Peanuts” strips. After this one, every published daily strip will be a repeat. There were a few new Sunday strips published following this one (due to Sunday strips being produced on different schedules). The artwork used in this strip was reused in the final Sunday strip.

So. The dailies ended the first Monday of January, and the Sunday ones ended the second week of February. (Sigh.)

This is just the end of Peanuts in Black-And-White. Mr. Schulz will now make the Daily Comic Strips in Full-Color!

I’m still surprised that none of Schulz’s children became cartoonists themselves and carried on their father’s work. I think 5 or 6 of Mort Walker’s kids did. I guess they wanted to pursue other interests.

Sadly Schultz didn’t last much longer than his strip. He died about a month after retiring.

This was not as much a satisfying ending as Calvin and Hobbes was. But I’ll miss you Sparky.
