Just watch for the rise and fall of the chest. That says they are still breathing.

I sleep on my back with my hands on my chest, and never move. Hubby says he will often watch me carefully to see if I am still breathing. Of course, if I’m not he’ll just slide me into my coffin without having to rearrange me.

Still liking this arc. So far, the “old dog” symptoms match up with my little friend (pictured@left).

Old Pepper (14+ years) has gone deaf, so poking scares her. We try to approach by stepping heavily.

When my older dog is asleep, if you disturb him (by touching him) – he growls (sometimes barks). It kinda freaks him out. If you call his name first to wake him, then he is fine. None of our other dogs are like that. He just really likes his sleep.
