Too bad Family Circus is a King Features comic and not a Creators.Com comic. We would love to see it here at GoComics.Com. I miss doing postings on it at Arcamax.com.
Ah, yes. God does have a sense of humor! On the other hand, the 40 years was a punishment for the Israelis rejecting the direct route. That was neither God’s nor Moses’ choice.
Wiley, I think you ought to post your 11 Nov cel that’s on your 2010 calendar on your daily strip as well. It’s a hoot!!! It’s the one about “I miss the days when… . ” and says a lot about the current economic situation.
Not so much rejecting the direct route as rejecting God and not trusting his plan. Immediately after getting the 40-year sentence in Num 14:33-34, they try to attack from the south (as God had wanted them to earlier) but are repulsed–and so have to make the detour.
Hey, folks, it’s a metaphorical folk tale, and Wiley’s been extending it in one humorous way or another for at least 13 years. What’s your “wilderness” and your “promised land”?
Zero is quite the low number. Whatever his understanding of Scripture, he has a fine understanding of the Family Circus. BTW a few months ago there was a very funny cross-over between Family Circus and Pearls Before Swine (who knew that cross-overs could happen in comics? And that Family Circus would play along?) I actually do have a Family Circus strip affixed to my fridge. Whenever friends come over and notice it, they say, “Wow, that’s actually funny.” (And it is. It can happen. Who knew.)
Wasn’t the purpose of 40 years in the wilderness was that the elders would die off and the youth would not remember the days in Egypt? A new beginning of sorts. And of course this has nothing to do with Family Circus, but there were some comments about the Bible story. CDWARD, your response, please.
Baslim very good interpretation. The bible is a series of parables for the illiterate to understand and for the Balladeers or Buskers to sing about.
Mythreesons - the reference to the Family Circus pertains to the way kids wander when sent on an errand; never going from point A directly to point B, but dallying and dillying all around the interesting nooks and crannies that confront them.
Had to check back in and see how the forum was shaping up and get my two cents in again. Thanks Wiley!.
Wiley, I always have to feel sorry for the people who think a comic strip should be an accurate representation of scripture. This strip today would be wonderful to place in a church bulletin at some point when a pastor wants to teach on this passage. Thank you for being thick skinned enough to make up these great pieces despite all the “theology” students and their comments.

Remember when the Creator got His Son to fill in for Him? (Yet the Son was still the Creator in another guise.)

I liked The Family Circus, especially when I was younger.

And of course, he’d never ask for directions. (Being Jewish he could, you know)

So that’s why it took 40 years to find a way out!

I always wondered about that 40 years thing… figure a leisurely pace, long lunches, maybe 3.5 miles a day?
51,135 miles, more than twice around the earth. Nobody ever said “that sand dune looks awfully familiar…”

Today’s strip is so far from reality. When would a man ever stop for directions.
I know that I don’t. Do I look lost? :-)
