I read the NY Times article after I heard some of the complaints. I think it was misunderstood. It was intended as a warning about the neo-Nazis trying to make themselves look normal and a warning that in some ways the effort was working. Maybe the article was too subtle, but that was the intent I saw and also according to a later editorial in the Times.
